Why did Assad use nerve gas?
Asia Times ^ | April 7, 201 | Stephen Bryen

Then why did he do it? He used nerve gas to block a peace process agreed by the US and Russia that would turn Syria into cantons and reduce Alawite control only to those districts where the Alawite minority dominates.

He didn’t. Ask any ex military. Especially anyone with NBC or Combat Chemical Casualty Course.

I’m familiar with CS having inhaled a bunch of it in the Fort Leonard Wood gas chamber. It’s not lethal.

No, but it's something you will remember your entire life......LOL!

Those links I gave you go to the main page on March for America but the videos are on the right where all the other videos are listed. Just look for the title. He is going to make it into one youtube video for both parts in a day or so.

It makes no sense to our Christianized western way of thinking. But to a middle-eastern Muslim paranoid dictator who has done this before, it might.

Bottom line is there is a ton of disinformation being put out from many sources and we do not know what is going on.

I trust Trump more then I trust our intelligence people, Assad, or the Russians. Hes not a fool.

One problem is that our intelligence services are so corrupted it’s hard to trust their analyses, and one wonders if they aren’t manipulating things to get the reaction and policy result they want.

+1

Worth repeating.

Sarin, like chlorine, hugs the ground before evaporating, which is why children were the first to be affected, those who went to underground shelters died wholesale, and why exposed people scrambled to rooftops. People don’t die on rooftops trying to escape conventional shelling. They’re on rooftops trying to outclimb the gas.

First responders in the videos were not all medical staff; they were neighbors, brothers, fathers, sons. Some of them died, too. Three autopsies were done, all were positive for sarin - that’s from Turkey and the OPCW (UN). Survivors will test positive for sarin exposure for up to 30 days after the event. Others will have various degrees of CNS nerve damage lasting 10 years or more, especially fine motor skills, so evidence of sarin exposure will be outwardly evident in some individuals for years to come. Same as it’s been for those of our soldiers exposed in Iraq.

Easy answer: 1) the gas, possibly homemade as Bogie (#28) pointed out (cf Japan Sarin attack) was used on the ground by the ‘rebels’ after the attack; or 2) the gas was already present when the bombs were dropped and the explosion(s) dispersed the gas.

I think there was a thread years back which said that the stock of Tommies was dwindling and the replacement was not on schedule or canceled - cant remember which.

In any case, the thread went on to point out they are no longer being made - existing stock upgraded perhaps, but the supply was limited.

I don’t think ISIS has the capability to produce sarin. It isn’t like making high explosives. It’s much more complex.
++++
I believe that is correct. And mixing the two components to create the sarin gas is not straightforward either. A bomb dropped on a binary sarin gas source is apparently not capable of performing that task.

But has there been reliable, definitive proof that it was sarin? I assume that autopsies would be required but perhaps there are other methods.

Well Russia has been quiet since the attack.

Our guy is going to Moscow on Tuesday.

Between us, and the Russians, someone knows what happened. Either the Russians were behind this, and found Trump to be strong, so they have backed off. Or the Assad regime was behind this, and that meeting will be rather interesting.

Or Trump could find out, he is wrong. Which would be sort of messy, but we could move forward.

We will know more, in a couple days.

“How do you personally know what General Mattis knows or doesn’t know?”

Personally? Just look at what the smart people are saying ... knee jerk reactions, just like the whole Kosovo war and all the muslim Albanian propaganda the media and the Clintons fell for so he could wag the dog, while killing Christians.

If they weren’t bent on war with Russia or looking good against Assad or some such lunacy they would have called for an investigation - shoot first and ask questions later is not a good policy in the ME. Further they, having shot, are still not calling for an investigation. Dolts, the lot.

Use your brain, look at the facts presented, which, in this case, make no sense as presented. Who gains, who loses, who has motive, who does not, and so on.

IMO, trying to apply rational thought to Assad is a futile exercise. You have a man who’s father exterminated tens of thousands of his own people as Assad’s role model. Then you have Assad Jr now who’s also exterminated tens of thousands of his own people, using chemical weapons on many of them.

Rational thought is not a character trait in Assad’s makeup. Therefore applying rational thought to his irrational behavior to explain it is never going to work.

There are a large number of scientists in the Middle East with the knowledge to manufacture chemical and biological weapons. Iraq had a few dozen mobile labs that were moved to Syria in the late 90s. A good friend and retired bioweaponeer made 39 trips to Iraq as part of the UN inspection team. Since this same team had an Iraqi mole in their midst, these labs were always a step ahead of discovery, and being mobile were moved to Syria, but the evidence was there according to the Col. The old media lied. The Col spoke the truth.

What wouldn’t surprise me, is that ISIS did the release. Muslims will be Muslims. They just murdered a church of Christians in Egypt.

I tend to agree with you. There are three mystery parts to this story.

1. Sarin, at your very best shelf life is five years (it needs to be made with that intent, and stored in the right temperature). At the end of the spectrum, you make the stuff and have to use it within four weeks (it loses it potency then). If I go with this usage, then I’m inclined to believe they were within a month or two of the expiration date, and just made a spur of the moment decision to use it before it was useless.

2. The Russians. Why would then bother telling the Russians? I think the Russians were left totally out of the picture.

3. The vehicle of use? I would assume that the US monitors their airspace, and knew that there was only one single fighter that was in the region at the time....a Fitter, and it came from the base bombed. If it’d been an artillery shell....totally different scenario. But they have some witnesses saying the gas came from bomb that came out of the sky.

My observation is that Assad hasn’t shown brilliance as a leader and this might be just another example of poor leadership.

You do not seem to have a grasp of what is actually happening in Syria beyond the media model. Deposing Assad will achieve the same result as deposing Gaddafi - a mess with various players stepping in, each killing the other, until a new strongman emerges.

We here in the West have some imaginary idea of what the muslin world should be like ruled by the people in some sort of US-like republic. Never happen. Islam forbids freedom, choice, democracy, and so on.

The only thing that kept the ME in relative peace - until the muslims destroyed Christian Lebanon - was iron-fisted repression of tribal peoples that cannot be controlled otherwise - this is also the reason the Saudis export Wahhabism.

The idea of rational thought in the ME is not what it is in the West. You cannot apply Western thought, rational or otherwise, to a muslim ruler or country and come out with any worthwhile result - just a muddle, which having been Western policy for decades, is why the ME is a mess.

It is about who gains and who loses - using gas on one building of no particular importance in a war zone is a losing proposition for Assad. However, making it look like it was Assad is a winning proposition for ISIS et al. who are fighting over that exact area and, in response, launched an attack on the SSA just 20 miles away.

I don’t think Assad used sarin or any other chemical weapon on a bunch of kids and non combatants. Why would he and to what point? It doesn’t pass the smell test so to speak, Imo this was done intentionally by one of the warring factions because they are rapidly losing to Assad and the Russians. Or possibly some existing stocks of chemical weapons was hit with a conventional bomb which resulted in enough chemical activation to cause the results noted. Removing Assad will just insure the ongoing Syrian quagmire continues as in Iraq and Libya. However a positive benefit of the tlam strike may be to restrain the Norks. Maybe little un will choose to remain fat, happy, and alive.
