In a significant advance toward creating the first designer complex cell, scientists say they are one-third of the way to synthesizing the complete genome of baker's yeast. In seven studies published Thursday in the journal Science, the researchers describe how they built six of the 16 chromosomes required for the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, altering the genetic material to edit out some genes and write in new characteristics.

Islam
The Blob will soon become a reality.
So this is a question for evolutionist
This is a step towards true intelligently designed life correct?
What scientific test would distinguish this from evolved life?
Cuz that’s been my point in all the elvolution versus intelligent design debates
I know of no scientific way to distinguish between the two so there’s no way to say you’ve proven something is evolve versus designed
Synthesizing yeast genomes is not creating life.
They always start with something living, refuse to admit it, and then declare that they have made life.
Awesome, in no time at all trans boys will be able to get designer yeast infections to compliment their designer vaginas.
That is the whole point.
They can take chemicals and build something that looks like a seed of corn, but they can never get it to grow.
Life always comes from life.
And death always comes from my ex fiance :)
“What is going to kill us first? Singularity AI or rogue synthetic life.”
“Islam”
Exactly.
People still have anti-western views from the 60’s that have permeated our society that even supposed conservatives can’t tell what’s real.
Swell- There was just an article about a deadly new yeast spreading around the world- now science is going to create a frankinyeast? We can’t even control the deadly yeasts that now exist
I’m thinking one word for the effects of all of this. Beer.
Pillsbury Dough Boy lives.
Marshmallows next!
I think “synthetic life” has long the source for Salisbury Steak served in Jr High & High School cafeterias.
The Chop Suey they served the next day was a breakdown product of the their Salisbury Steaks!
Can you make beer with that yeast?
