Finding micrometeorites in city gutters
The Economist ^ | 17 Dec, 2017

ABOUT 4.6bn years ago, a spinning disc of gas and dust began to coalesce into balls of matter. The largest sphere, at the disc’s centre, collapsed under its own gravity to form the sun. Other clumps of dust, scattered around its periphery, became planets and asteroids. In planets this dust has long since metamorphosed into rock. But in many asteroids it is still more or less intact. As a consequence, when asteroids collide, some of it is liberated—and a small fraction of that material eventually falls to Earth as micrometeorites. This micrometeoritic dust arrives at a rate of around six tonnes a day. Spread over Earth’s surface, that amounts to just one particle per square metre each year.

Researchers go to great lengths to gather these grains, because they can reveal details of the solar system’s composition and history. They normally collect them by dredging up ooze from the ocean bed, then sifting and filtering it to find a few precious particles, or by melting tonnes of ice from the Antarctic to see what precipitates. Those two locations have the advantage of being isolated and reasonably free of dust from industrial sources. Now, in a study just published in Geology, a group of researchers have identified about 500 micrometeorites from an unlikely source: gutter sediment from the roofs of buildings in two of Europe’s capital cities.....

Micrometeorites contain magnetite, a naturally magnetic form of iron oxide, commonly known as lodestone. Mr Larsen’s first step was therefore to pass his slurry, about 300kg of it, past a magnet and keep anything that stuck. He then examined the 30kg or so of debris that resulted under a microscope...

Close your eyes and unlock your knees to understand gravities.

The guy’s got some serious OCD if he can examine 30 kilograms of dust under a microscope.

Interesting mythology. I wonder how old the texts are that it is based upon:

ABOUT 4.6bn years ago, a spinning disc of gas and dust began to coalesce into balls of matter. The largest sphere, at the disc’s centre, collapsed under its own gravity to form the sun. Other clumps of dust, scattered around its periphery, became planets and asteroids.

Genesis, but not Deuteronomy, I suspect.

Many years back I put a plastic bucket under the downspout.
A magnet in a plastic bag after a few weeks, resulted in a few “fly specs”, that happened to be magnetic.

This time use the microscope!

And somewhere I have some concave slides, if I can find them!!!

This will be fun!

Thanks

No way did he collect 30 Kg (66 Lb) of magnetic material!

What do you have against Deuteronomy? You just have to know the difference between the Judicial Law, the Ceremonial Law, and the Moral law.

I’m jealous I don’t have a decent microscope...toy POS from Radio Shack...this would be a cool project.

If you want a really strong magnet, take apart a hard drive from an old junk computer, they have a couple inside, on the big ends of the arms that read the disc. Just be careful, if you get it near a metal surface like the fridge, it will snap to it hard enough to make a blood blister on your fingertip. (firsthand experience talking...) Most of the time I have to slide them off a metal surface, so strong you can’t just pick them up like normal magnets.

Nothing against Deut. Just curious about how one portion of the Book is taken literally and other portions are dismissed. Few of the “rules” of Duet. are enforceable or followed outside of ultra orthodox Judaism.

That’s why you have to sort out the laws. (Although there can be a bit of friction in how you classify some things).

For example, the sacrificial laws were all looking forward to Christ, and were completely fulfilled in His ultimate sacrifice on the cross. The judicial laws were for the government of that people at that time (although the Theonomists would disagree). The moral law is universal, and is for all times and places, although it must be understood from the totality of Scripture.

The magnets from the full height 5.25” HDD, very nice!
And what I used at the time.

Purchased a couple medium size N52 magnets on ebay; oh my!

Brought them in to dazzle my coworkers.
A young buck was showing how he could separate them, using his thighs for added strength.
He had them about six inches apart, and relaxed his grip.
The magnets, did NOT relax!
Yes, blood!
His wife later told me, “another inch and no more kids”!

Found a very nice binocular American Optical, mechanical stage... FIFTY DOLLARS! EBAY
