The leaders of four major global cities say they will stop the use of all diesel-powered cars and trucks by the middle of the next decade.
The mayors of Paris, Mexico City, Madrid and Athens say they are implementing the ban to improve air quality.
They say they will give incentives for alternative vehicle use and promote walking and cycling.
The commitments were made in Mexico at a biennial meeting of city leaders.
The use of diesel in transport has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years, as concerns about its impact on air quality have grown. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that around three million deaths every year are linked to exposure to outdoor air pollution.

Diesel engines contribute to the problem in two key ways - through the production of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Very fine soot PM can penetrate the lungs and can contribute to cardiovascular illness and death.
Nitrogen oxides can help form ground level ozone and this can exacerbate breathing difficulties, even for people without a history of respiratory problems.
As the evidence has mounted, environmental groups have used the courts to try and enforce clear air standards and regulations. In the UK, campaigners have recently had success in forcing the government to act more quickly.
Now, mayors from a number of major cities with well known air quality problems have decided to use their authority to clamp down on the use of diesel.

The mayors? So what?
My turbo Mercedes diesel has none of those problems
The health benefits will be enormous. Have to applaud intelligent regulatory decisions, where an inconvenience to a few improves the lives of millions.
About 95% of the miles I drive are at 70mph and diesels are perfectly suited for such driving.I've owned three diesels since '08 (I totaled one of them...ouch!) and I'll never go back.
Mayors and their councils pass enforced local laws.
This will ban Delivery vehicles, Taxis, Service vehicles, and private residents’ vehicles.
In short, the total destruction of the city for those living and working in it.
It's the same article cited by both government and private enterprise.
The bottom line of delivering goods is the bottom line, so economical (less expensive) delivery to the consumer is the ONLY bottom line item for the consumer that needs a product but can't afford it.
Cat food or medication ?
I rented a diesel Opel Corsa 5 door in Italy this past October — that was a great engine! Drove all over the place and I was shocked I only used 8 gallons of fuel. Too bad we can’t get them here.
It’s current mayors trying to make laws for 2025. If they’re out of office in the next year or two why can’t the next mayor just make a new law ?
Neither does mine, but they still run on the ‘current talking point’ fuel.
They can. But will they?
When was the last time a piece of ‘Green’ legislation was ever rolled back?
We can but hope there is sufficient outcry about this.
Pretty sure semi-trailers are all diesel. Cost of crap in those cities is going to skyrocket.
Semi trucks, school buses, hospital backup generators, maintenance trucks, airport ground support equipment, et cetera.
Assuming you forgot the /sarc tag.
Gasoline is dangerous. Gasoline is a solvent while Diesel is an oil. Gasoline is reactive to your body’s static electricity.
There are clean-burning Diesels. Change the fuel, substituting CNG for Diesel fuel, and so many of the problems with particulates, excess carbon monoxide, and sulfur simply disappear. Using urea-injection also takes care of the NOx (nitrate oxides) problem. The carbon dioxide amounts to a pinch of sh*t in the overall problem, and would be generated regardless of the hydrocarbon fuel used.
This is an engineering problem, most of the technical design factors have already been worked out and have been applied in a number of situations.
Cluster approaching...
Modern Diesel engines are not like the ones I grew up with - no black or gray smoke; they smell like burnt vegetable oil; they require an exhaust lubricant which if it runs out shuts the engine down.
All totally ridiculous.
