Officials said that prima facie the cause of the accident could be due to track fracture. Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha told reporters at the spot that it seems the cause of the accident is rail fracture. Member (Engineering) of the Railway Board will find out the cause of the mishap and action will be taken against those responsible, he said. With several passengers feared trapped, rescue personnel employed cold cutters to break open the compartments as gas cutters produced excessive heat and suffocation hampering their efforts.

A number of trapped passengers were rescued. Teams of army doctors, railway officials and personnel of NDRF, state PAC and other policemen were involved in carrying out rescue and relief operation. The Chief Minister instructed the DGP to personally monitor the relief operations and deploy traffic police along the route of the mishap site to ensure green corridor for ambulances to reach hospitals quickly.

More ambulances/roadways buses have been rushed to the spot for speedy relief operations, the CM said. DG Health and ADG (Law and Order) also rushed to the accident spot to monitor the relief operations. Buses were pressed into service to help passengers complete their journey, Kumar said.

I'm always surprised when these kinds of accidents kill dozens, or even hundreds of people. An equivalent wreck in the States might claim half a dozen lives, maybe a few more. But in India, a low-speed collision might cost 40 or 50 lives.

But then I recall the pictures of Indian trains, where there are hundreds of passengers riding on the roofs, the rear platforms, and even handing off the sides.

In India, life is both plentiful and cheap.

I remember a derailment in Bihar back around 1980, where several cars fell into a river. The official death toll was about 800, but it was widely believed at the time to be much higher.

Anybody who does not understand how a few cars falling into a river could have such a high death toll has never ridden on an Indian train.

I have met some really smart, interesting Indian people. But there are vast cultural differences between us and them. Riding on the outside of trains is just one example.

Very sad! And in the U.S.:

Thanksgiving week one of deadliest on the highway

Excerpt: During each Thanksgiving week from 2005-2010, the average number of traffic fatalities nationwide was 798; for all other weeks, the average was 748, according to a new University of Alabama analysis of federal data on road deaths. . . .

“I have met some really smart, interesting Indian people.”

So have I, but less than 1% of those I have met.

Not so. There are many, many high IQ people in India. If you read the Bell Curve, their ethnic group averages about 10-15 points above Caucasians. Much of their difficulty lies in their socialistic bent which represses people and removes opportunities.

Not true. I’ve read the Bell Curve, have you? Didn’t think so since you repeated that Internet lie.

The Bell Curve only ranked East Asians; Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese, not Indians who are Western Asians.
