A suspect has died after being shot by two police officers in Concord following the stabbing of a man as well as a police canine who responded to the scene, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded at about 2 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a stabbing in the 2900 block of Crawford Street, Concord police spokesman Cpl. Christopher Blakely said.
About a half-hour later, officers located the suspect in the backyard of a home not associated with him in the 1400 block of San Jose Avenue, near Prospect Street and only a block from the Concord BART station.
After giving the suspect orders to surrender, officers sent a police canine named Jelle in to try to subdue the suspect, who used some sort of garden shears to stab the dog in the face, Blakely said.
Blakely said he didn't yet have the details about what happened next, but two officers shot the suspect, who was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and later died.
The victim in the initial stabbing, which involved a weapon other than the shears, is in stable condition at a hospital, he said.
Blakely said the suspect, a man in his 30s whose name is not yet being released, had prior contacts with police. He didn't immediately know more details about the initial stabbing, which occurred outside of a home.
The police dog Jelle is being treated at a veterinary hospital and will be OK, he said.
The two officers who shot the man both had more than 10 years of experience with the Police Department and are being interviewed about the incident by investigators, Blakely said. While what immediately preceded the shooting remains under investigation, Blakely said the fact that the dog was stabbed would not by itself warrant an officer to open fire.
"As much as we love our dogs, a police canine is not considered an officer," he said. "Officers aren't going to shoot just because the dog is getting stabbed."
I grew up very near there, right by the Walnut Creek station.
Glad Jelle is going to be okay.
The officers had 10 years on the force. So what?
I'm far more interested in the fate of this turd's HUMAN victims than I am in the fate of a mere beast.
Correct.
Learn the law, you ignorant fool. (Not directed at the Freeper OP.)

“Blakely said he didn’t yet have the details about what happened next, but two officers shot the suspect, who was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and later died”
Interesting. Apparently they know he stabbed someone earlier, know that they took a good while to locate him, knows it was in a yard of a homeowner not associated with the man, knows officers deployed the k9 unit to try to subdue the man, know that the dog was stabbed, know that the dog was stabbed with garden shears, knows that the garden shears were a different weapon than the original stabbing, but does not know the circumstances of the officer involved shooting, but does know that both officers fired their weapons and knows they both hit him.
Interesting.
Yup
Yup
Correct"
But as John Q Citizen and my dogs getting stabbed, hell is coming.
Sorry Ffeepers, getting no posting or double posts lately. Not happy with my phone’s last update.
Yeah, well, they also know "As much as we love our dogs, a police canine is not considered an officer," he said. "Officers aren't going to shoot just because the dog is getting stabbed."
LOL, like hell they won't.
John Q Citizen stabs John Y Citizens dog, and John Y Citizen shoots John Q Citizen, does John Y Citizen go to jail?
This happened near where I live last year. The Deputies had a guy cornered in a barn or shed. The guy grabbed the K9 and started stabbing him and he was immediately gunned down. Where I live K9s are treated as officers. The LEOs love their dogs. And Horses.
“John Q Citizen stabs John Y Citizens dog, and John Y Citizen shoots John Q Citizen, does John Y Citizen go to jail?”
If you are unwilling to protect your own, dog or not, you deserve jail one way or another.
