Or they could just consider most of the turtles as abortions for the good of the turtle. Better to be eaten by predators than live a life of poverty and neglect. It would be an inconvenience to raise them anyway...

Turtle soup used to be a common and expensive dish in the Southern US restaurants.
If they raised them for that specific reason, you would have more turtles than you could count.
There are no shortages of cattle or hogs................
