Within 24 hours the patient's responses had improved and in just three days he was fully conscious and had fist-bumped a doctor.
Doctors have woken a coma patient for the first time ever by jump-starting his brain using a pioneering ultrasound technique.
A saucer-sized device was put against the side of the 25-year-old patients head over a 10 minute period.
Each of the 10 half-minute, low-intensity pulses created acoustic energy to stimulate brain tissue.
The patients responses improved measurably within 24 hours. In three days he was fully conscious and had complete language comprehension.
He could nod his head yes or shake his head no. He even made a fist-bump gesture to say goodbye to one of his doctors.
The unnamed man, who had shown only minimal signs of being conscious before the treatment at University of California, Los Angeles, has made remarkable progress since.
The ultrasound wakes brain nerve cells in the thalamus, which controls movement and consciousness.
The breakthrough, reported in medical journal Brain Stimulation, may lead to the development of a low-cost, helmet-like, portable device to wake patients.
Experts believe even those in a vegetative or minimally conscious state could benefit.
Currently, there is no effective treatment for such patients.
Study Lead author Dr Martin Monti, a professor of psychology and neurosurgery at UCLA, said: The changes were remarkable. Its almost as if we were jump-starting the neurons back into function.
Until now, the only way to achieve this was a risky surgical procedure known as deep brain stimulation, in which electrodes are implanted directly inside the thalamus.
Our approach directly targets the thalamus but is non-invasive.
He said the procedure would need more testing before his team could determine if it could consistently help everyone to recover from comas.

How long do you have to wait for a guy to come out of a coma before you can ask his ex-girlfriend out?
Couldn't this breakthrough technique be used to pop Hillary Clinton back to life when she goes into her frozen mode? The saucer-sized device could be hidden in her wig and then remotely turned on as needed through blue tooth technology. Huma could carry a small hand held button which when pushed would blast the FPOTUS back to life as needed.
Nasty :D
No one wonders what fetal ultrasound does to the fetal brain
It would have been a much better story if how long the patient had been comatose were included.
You can ask his girlfriend out before you put him in a coma.
How hot is she ?
that's the very first thing that came to my mind too.
Ask Laz
Pic no worky.............
30 days, tops..................
Yeah, and now did her brain x-ray look again? I forgot if it was normal or if the brain showed damage.
Quick, someone please forward the link to Hitlery!

It’s a fair question....
Not being an expert in ultra-sound I would think it would depend on the the frequency of the carrier wave.
Since the article itself does not mention diagnostic ultra-sound against what was used on this person, the inference is that they are the same, yet I doubt that is the case.
Although it may very well be.
Epidemic autism ever seen in history and no curiosity over why
Anecdotal, of course. But all four of my children had multiple ultrasounds in utero and none are autistic.
