This is the moment workers connected the two sides of the world's longest sea bridge - seven years after building first began. The last steel box girder was installed for the crossing on Wednesday, which spans the estuary of the Pearl River connecting Hong Kong and China. The project, called Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is 14 miles long and also includes an underwater tunnel. Construction of the Y-shaped bridge began in 2009 at a cost of 100 billion yuan ($15billion). And when the bridge opens to traffic, it will shorten the distance between Hong Kong, Zhuhau and Macao. It will officially open in 2017 with most of the work beforehand taking place at night when the temperature is cooler.

The US used to be able to build infrastructure like this but we can't have nice things anymore because of NIMBYs, environmentalists, labor unions, and every other whiny subgroup. In comparison to China spending $19 billion for 19 mile sof bridge/tunnel, the Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge costs $6.4 billion for little over 2 miles. The Tappan Zee Bridge replacement has ballooned to at least $6 billion for less than a mile.

We can’t have nice things because the cost of our government and everything they do is simply outrageous.

So, now the communists on the mainland can repress the Hong Kong-ese even more thoroughly, and without even getting wet!

Tappen Zee. Are you kidding? Anything done in NYC constructionwise is a joke.

Remember 30 years ago joking on the express bus that they will still be working on BQE when I retire.

Getting close.

Getting close to retiring or they're getting close to finishing BQE? whatever that is.

17 years I retire and they’ll STILL be working on it.

The connecting highway from Staten Island to Manhattn through Brooklyn.

Just figured since Tappan Zee isn’t that far, you would know it. Sorry :)

Are tickets on sale for another bizarre, demonic, opening ceremony for this bridge?

I thought maybe BQE was a bridge to connect Brooklyn, Queens, and Europe. :)

It’s not Zhuhau, it’s Zhuhai...:)

That bridge has sprung up FAST! I travel to the Zhuhai area every 8-10 weeks, and over the last few years this thing has kicked butt. It’ll be open for business in another 3-4 months supposedly.

So, now the communists on the mainland can repress the Hong Kong-ese even more thoroughly, and without even getting wet!

You could walk from Shenzhen to Hong Kong - right at the Luohu border. HK territory and China already share a land border. And HK Island (old HK) is linked via tunnels, bridges, and subways to the rest of the HK peninsula (Kowloon and the New Territories).

This bridge connects Lantau Island (where the airport is) to Macao and Zhuhai. It'll remove some of the pressure of commuters and shipping from the Luohu crossing.
