Mysterious Stuxnet copycat discovered

Security researchers have uncovered new malware targeting industrial control systems that uses similar techniques to those employed by the infamous Stuxnet worm.

Infosec firm FireEye today published a report on the 'Irongate' malware it discovered at the end of last year.

The researchers found the malware within the database of the Google-owned VirusTotal website, which allows users and security researchers to submit suspicious files for scanning by antivirus software.

Two samples of Irongate had been uploaded in 2014 by different sources, the researchers said, but had not been flagged as malicious by any antivirus vendors' scanners.

FireEye only discovered the malware when searching for suspicious samples compiled by PyInstaller, and noted the references to SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition for industrial controllers) in the two Irongate samples.

Irongate uses techniques seen in Stuxnet - which manipulates SCADA systems to hide their real readings from industrial processes - to attack industrial controllers.

Wouldn’t be the first time the US national security establishment taught enemies how to make weapons to use against us. Won’t be the last, either.

Where do you see any security establishment (company/agency) behind this? The article at first glance seems to convey no such intimations.

Who invented Stuxnet in the first place and for what purpose, and then in deploying it gave both code and cause for retaliation to the target?

Oh, so you are one of those who subscribe to the agitprop that the U.S. Government was behind it all? Well, to be honest, I have not been keeping up with the news as much as I should have been, so if you could kindly provide a link where a certified Governmental Representative both acknowledges and takes credit for all that then I would dearly love to see the references to that event.

Or events, as the case might be.

Some of the Hackers you know personally that were actively involved with the Stuxnet activities should also be willing to identify what all they knew about any such involvements, would you not say? N’est Ce Pas?

Nonetheless, all involved with the Production / Manufacturing aspect of things might wish to take notice.

Cheers.

Agitprop? Is that what you call common sense?

Or are you some sort of coincidence theorist who thinks that these things just magically appear and just happen to align perfectly with existing US government policy?

Come on, you can’t be that naive.

I notice how conveniently you avoided the requests I posted for links concerning proof that Governmental Intervention was Behind It All.

But, be that as it may, your position that the governmental agencies currently existing are somehow behind such evil-intentioned programmes is quite amusing. In most areas I am aware of, the governmental employees are NOT the cutting-edge of coders or programmers, so your belief in the origin of this particular piece of cake-cutting coding is really quite remarkable.

Nonetheless... thanks for the laugh.

Cheers.

If you hadn’t conveniently dodged all my questions first I might take you seriously enough to address yours.

Your move!

Oh and here’s your update on what everyone with two brain cells to rub together had already figured out years ago.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/06/confirmed-us-israel-created-stuxnet-lost-control-of-it/

I found this via the super secret technique of putting “who invented stuxnet” into Google. It’s an advanced technique which I will be happy to teach to you for a modest fee.

It’s late. Thanks for the opportunity to challenge any previously-held opinions. I am certain we can have many future opportunities to exchange thoughts about.

For now, I am simply too tired to continue following this thread for too much longer and I must get ready for the morrow now.

Feel free to continue on as you see fit, however, and I am certain that as soon as I am more awake I will gladly assist in determining the truth in this matter when the opportunity next arises.

Cheers. :)

NSA does a pretty good job with that stuff. And the government did make a sidehanded admission that it with Israel were behind Stuxnet.
