The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Last weekend, I was able to get my Yukon Gold potatoes planted, some lettuce, carrots, and spinach. Nothing has sprouted yet. I forgot to water on Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll have to get out soon and water stuff today. At least the sun is out and the day looks pretty.

5-8 inches of snow forecast for Saturday. So much for any garden work this weekend here in SE PA.
We are luckier than you - no snow, but hubby and I both have avoided the outdoors due to cold weather the last couple of days - we must be feeling older. LOL

The garden is coming together - I finally cleaned it out and mulched the entire garden. I think this will be the best year yet (going into my third year). The roses all have buds but I also found a terrible aphid infestation. I’ve been treating them with neem oil mixed with water and a couple of drops of dawn grease cutting dish wash. I would really like to see a spectacular display this year. The rest of my garden is looking pretty hale and hearty. I wish I could figure out how to post pictures but it seems like that is beyond me.
I have one little tomato plant (Early Girl) and it has blossoms. This weekend is expected to be cold (30 degrees) so I’ll be covering my annuals and the tomato.
I hope everyone else is doing well.
We’ve had two storms with about 5-6 inches of snow each over the past couple of weeks. Hail today here in Massachusetts. My seedlings really need to get outdoors into some warm weather!

I come to this thread with a request for info.
In years past I’ve bought Collards seedlings from the stand in front of my supermarket that also pushes herbs and of course 25 different types of tomato.
This year I cannot find any, at any store in Houston. It is too late to start from seed, and I have no experience with that anyhow.
My query: Does any one know of a place in Houston that sells Collards or, in a pinch Mustard or other green seedlings?

I have a question for anyone who might know something about Bitter Sweet. I bought the seeds last year and it said to put them in the freezer. They are still there. I’m in IN and frost will be here until around Derby time. The first Saturday in May. Does that mean I must wait until May to plant or can I plant the seeds now? Any help will be much appreciated. Ignore if this isn’t a flower thread.

My roses got something last year, and never got over it, so I’m probably going to need to rip them out and plant something different this year.
Yes, much better. Spring will be sprung one of these days, I just get impatient, but at least we don’t have snow or hail right now.
We’re expecting 32 tonight but the big lake will keep us closer to 40. We bought a pickup load of mulch (about $100) and additized our raised beds and turned them over.
All the plants remain indoors for another week. Once again we’re wondering if we started seeds too early (Feb 10-12.) All are healthy and ready to go out.
We do have a fantastic crop of may apples...
Have you tried a web search for collard seedlings? Some of the catalog nurseries might have something you could order on line.
Husband brought in a few packs of seeds today - some sort of
a salad green & a couple of packs of snow peas for stir
frying.
I’ve been covering my lilac for the last three nights with a sheet here in IN. We had the threat of possible snow flurries early this morning. Its my first year for lilac and I’m so excited. Someone from my former work gave me a snip from hers last year. It has over 6 blooms on it. I was shocked thinking it would take a least three years to bloom.
The weather has been very odd here.
Hi. I’ve just been lurking since my knee replacement, but I think that I may be able to get out to garden a little this year. I’m trying to fix up my landscaping which has taken a beating over the 3 years I’ve spent indoors in a chair.
Does anybody know anything about Wine and Roses Weigelia? Such as zone and whether deer eat it. I saw it recommended in a garden show on TV, but most of those are filmed in the South. Many times their recommendations are not hardy enough for Wisconsin.
I think the Wine and Roses Weigelia would be a nice foundation plant to replace some of the Yews that never took hold. Low growing and repeat blooming all summer.

Sow seeds in spring outdoors in mostly sunny locations once the threat of frost has passed by placing seeds in soil and covering lightly with soil and a thin layer of mulch. Avoid planting near trees as bittersweet’s rapid growth can damage or even kill trees. Mix in compost, peat moss, decaying leaves or manure to recreate the rich, soggy environment American bittersweet prefers.
Thin emerging seedlings to 12 to 36 inches apart. Water regularly to keep soil moist until established.

I have 3 flats of them in my front yard. Collards, mustard greens, and two kinds of kale that I picked up on the “free plants” stand at my local mom & pop nursery. Figured it was getting too hot for them, so that’s why they were out there.
Gave some flats away to friends.
I don’t know how you cook them. Sorry, I’m about 300 miles from you or you could have them. :(
