Well, being the slacker that I am, I did finally clean out my greenhouse today. There was a snail invasion, and they ate pepper plants, lettuce, cucuzza seedlings.

I had put deadline in there, but after the damage was done.
There seems to be some kind of ground dwelling hornet in there, too, but besides buzzing me, he wasn’t a problem. Wish hornets ate snails.

I still have cucuzza seeds if anyone wants any...lol, since I had no takers two gardening threads ago when I offered them.
FReepmail your Addy if you want any.

I guess I need to go water all the plants I took out of the greenhouse, and enjoy the outdoors.

Maybe. I’ve had some warm milk several ways - no help, but haven’t tried the vanilla. The dietician only allows me 60g of carbs per day other than the low carb lettuce, kale, broccoli etc. so 2 glasses of milk per day uses up most of my ration.

I almost always have a little milk or cheese snack a while before bedtime. Sometimes a little milk, turkey, and cheese. Ambien will give me about 5 hours, but I will not take that more than once a week!

I’ve not heard of cucuzza. I’ll have to look that up.

Normally I start the garden mid-April, but early March was so warm I took a chance on March 12 and put in a few spring crops, but the recent very hard freezes have not been kind to them - I still might get some turnips and bok choy but the beets do not look happy at all.

Well, I should have guessed it was a squash. LOL My Pen-Pal in England would talk about courgette and I’d wonder what in the world is she talking about now. She doesn’t call our zucchini my our name but courgette in their mane.

I purchased decorative gourds from the farmer’s market last fall ...I couldn’t believe how expensive they have become. ;(

I let them dry, on the back porch [all winter] and broke them open, deseeded them ... and put the seeds in peat pots. It’s been about a week ...and they are sprouting. HEEHAW! I’ll have to wait to see hoe they grow this summer.

IIRC, I saw *Burpee* gourd seeds on the huge rack at Walmart.

Cucuzza are actually an edible gourd, treated like a zucchini when small. I love them as they aren’t affected by Squash Vine Borers which are a problem for me.

My onions started bolting today. I have as many as 11 leaves on them, but bulbs no larger than golf balls Oh well.

I’ve been reading that the leaves are edible, but I’m not sure what to do with them. I’m thinking soup, or maybe as the base of a stock. Anyone?

Someone posted here a few weeks ago about growing garlic, and a comment was made about making sure you get the right varieties for your area. I could not for the life of me remember where, but I had in the past ordered from a place that offered selections based on your ZIP code, and I had good luck with what I received. Found the invoice at the bottom of a pile of papers the other day:

sockmonkey : "There was a snail invasion, and they ate pepper plants, lettuce, cucuzza seedlings."

Beer placed in a shallow pie plate at soil level will attrack the snails - and they drown with an intoxicated look on their face.
Chemical treatment : Bets-Snail

Darth Reardon :" My onions started bolting today. I have as many as 11 leaves on them, but bulbs no larger than golf balls Oh well."

Do you happen to know the variety of onions they are ?
There are some varieties that are short day onions , and some that are long day onions.
The short day onions are generally sown/grown in the fall from 'sets', rather than from seed.
Long day onions are generally sow in the spring, and mature as the days get longer
Other than varietal problems, either grown too closely (crowding), inadequate consistent moisture, or possible mineral deficiency
or inadequate fertilization results in smaller bulbs.
When in doubt, add more compost as it will retain moisture, especially in sandy soils, and add mineral content .
Have you had a recent soil test to determine soil type , ph level , or possible mineral deficiencies ?

Darth Reardon :" My onions started bolting today."

Once the onions start bolting (flowering, set seed), there is no stopping them .
Onion greens can be used in soups, stews, and marinades as a flavor enhancer.
If you are concerned on how they look , either dice them finely , or sieve them out with a strainer before serving.
Even the blooms can be used as a garnish .
