The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
It will soon be time to start seeds here, and mid March will be when we expose the potatoes to sunlight in preparation for planting April 1. I am hoping for some warm weather to continue patio and garden cleanup that we didn't get done last fall.
Hope everyone is doing well. Thanks for your get well wishes. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
Why are some roses red and others white?
I live 30 miles or so from Bristol, Va. we have tried to grow garlic for the last two years but each attempt failed.
Is it possible to grow garlic in SW Va? The books suggest it is, but so far my thumb is brown, not green.
that is an idyllic setting, I’m jealous. :P
Wow, it’s 81 and sunny in Central TX. My Belgian endive is droopy from the heat.
hi everybody!
((((HUGS))))
We made it above zero today...and only -14 tonight.
Breeding or artificial coloring.
Cold and beautiful. Thanks for the pic.
Color determination is based on Genetic predispostion.
Anthocyanidins are the compounds in the pigments of flower leaves that combine with reflected light to give flowers their different colors.
These genetics are selectively grown for color ,height, size, bunching habit, etc.
I have it on good information that the flowers grown at 'State Farm Insurance' turn color at 2:00AM to 'Kacki'.
Well, I would think that it is. Have you checked the University Extension office for Virginia to see which ones do best in your area?
I have read that soft necks are easier to grow, if you are not too far north. I had good luck here with garlic ordered from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, and they sent a nice 4 page growing guide.
Garlic prefers well drained sandy loam, and at any rate needs plenty of organic matter and a rather neutral PH. They are heavy feeders, and phosphorus and potassium are particularly important.
I get the kind that is planted in the fall, and cover it with mulch and/or row cloth in the winter. It usually matures in June. I save the best ones to use for replanting.
Good Luck.
Oh some heat would be nice, and that temp is good for sprouting seeds, but tough on cool weather crops.
thanks for the info. Hopefully it will help.
Right back at you.
LOL. Thank you for that!
Another suggestion is to go to your local farmers market , and purchase some of their 'sets' since they are already acclimated to your climate.
Also , there may be several 'seed exchanges' in your area to increase plant diversity , and might include some heirloom varieties for your consideration.
thank you.
Hi greeneyes!
I’m glad you’re feeling better.
