You shoulda known better than to leave a pan of that open around that dog. Or was this the first you learned of his bent for such an exotic beverage?

“Yep also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol and wood naphtha. Kill ya dead every time!”

Not if you strain it through a slice of bread first. (Well, at least that’s what I heard.)

They should have just gotten some Kickapoo Joy Juice instead.

I know what that is, having played in the pit band in high-school production of Lil' Abner.

This is in the Wikipedia entry for KJJ:

The Wall Street Journal had a regular feature on mixed drinks, and once published in it a recipe for 'Kickapoo Joy Juice'. The backstory is that it was originally illicit hooch ginned up by soldiers during World War II, often starting from alcohol intended for fuel for torpedoes and the like.

During the last days of the Soviet Empire, rocket fuel was stolen from the rockets for the same purpose.

Thinking back to Chem 1 in college, the prof said you could make vodka (ethyl alcohol) out of crude oil, but the major problem would probably be marketing.

Reminds me of a Tony Bourdain show in the Ukraine (iirc), where a local host tried to get him to invest in vodka made from chicken poo.

Carbon is carbon, I guess, just a matter of creating the molecule you want with the correct number of carbon atoms.

I remember my dad talking about guys that drank “Torpedo Juice” when he was in the Navy during WWII.

He also said you couldn’t leave any after shave laying around because it would disappear.

So was it the racing fuel or the Mountain Dew that killed him?

Not if you strain it through a slice of bread first. (Well, at least that’s what I heard.)

That was the story (obviously wrong) some Navy submariners were told during WWII. Quite a few died from draining the Methyl Alcohol from the torpedoes and straining it through bread.

Read the book, "Mig Pilot." The Mig-25 used Ethyl Alcohol to cool the electronics and the ground crews would steal gallons of it for their own use. The Soviet Air Force added a vomiting agent to stop the thefts but the crews would just go ahead and drink it anyway.

Actually that’s a holdover from prohibition, straining shoe polish or other products containing ethanol solvent, through loaf-bread. Don’t count on that technique to work in removing any methanol blended in.

“Stephenson’s friend was rushed to an area hospital where he is still in a coma.”

Hope the kid makes it. I also hope he comes out okay. He stands a good chance of being blinded by the stuff.
