If you own a drone, you must register it with the Federal Aviation Administration's Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry. A federal law effective December 21, 2015 requires unmanned aircraft registration, and you are subject to civil and criminal penalties if you do not register.

The new law requires federal registration of all UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) between 250g (just over 1/2 pound) and 55 pounds beginning Dec. 21. Homemade or store-bought, tethered or not, any model aircraft, drone, or other UAS must be registered if it's flown outdoors, or the owner will face criminal and civil penalties. The is a $5 fee which is being rebated until January.
Not surprisingly, only US citizens are able to register their UAS,
There are many websites and blog with commentary about the new rules since their were announced earlier today, I thought it might be worth posting the actual FAA link for FReepers benefit.
With millions of hobbyists heading to the registration website let's hope they borrowed all that great technology from Obamacare! Rock on Big Brother!!

I predict a market boom in 56 pound and larger drones. As well as micro drones under 250 grams.

So non-citizens are exempt? Only the trustworthy ones who attend services at the Mosque regularly.

I think you’re half right, >55 pounds is already illegal or regulated otherwise. It will be an incentive for the carbon fiber and lithium battery guys.

You know what the Federal Government ought to register? Baseballs. Think about it. If someone should throw a baseball up into the air, that ball could conceivably hit an airplane, or maybe land on some innocent's head. Baseballs ought to be registered, and then closely monitored.
But wait a second. A person could instead throw an egg into the air, or maybe even a pencil sharpener. Just to be safe, the Federal Government should register everything.

I will not comply.
This is just like gun registration. They know drones with cameras are force multipliers that could be used against Federal forces in any one of a blizzard of possible civil unrest / civil war scenarios. And the Feds want the upper hand.
Come make me, Feds.

Arrows can be very dangerous.
The Arrow and the Song
I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
H.W. Longfellow

As long as it can’t fly underwater, I think you’ll be OK.
