Large igneous provinces linked to extinction events
Science Daily ^ | October 30, 2015 | Geological Society of America

Mass extinction events are sometimes portrayed in illustrations of volcanic eruptions causing widespread destruction. According to Dr. Richard E. Ernst of Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, expert on Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs), this interpretation may have some truth behind it, but not in the instantaneous way we might think. Ernst will report on his research on 1 November at the Geological Society of America's Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

The basaltic lava flowing from ancient volcanoes and the portion of magma (liquid rock) emplaced underground can create geologic conditions linked with climate change and, subsequently, extinction events. This climatic effect is particularly true for LIPs, in which mainly basaltic magma up to millions of cubic kilometers can be emplaced in a geologically short time of less than a few million years.

"The most dramatic climatic effect is global warming due to greenhouse-gases from LIPs," explains Ernst. "Subsequent cooling (and even global glaciations) can be caused by CO2 drawdown by weathering of LIP-related basalts."

The environmental impact of the Russian and Deccan Traps were massive in comparison with today's minor increase in CO2.

"There are additional environmental effects associated with LIP deposition, Ernst reports. "Effects associated with LIPs also include oceanic anoxia (massive marine organism die off due to oxygen deficiency), sea level changes, etc." The sheer size of an LIP is not the only factor. "Also contributing to climatic/extinction effects are the abundance of LIP-produced pyroclastic material and volatile fluxes that reach the stratosphere, and in particular the role of super-eruptions."

Large Igneous Province would be a good name for a punk rock band...

Bosh! Everybody knows it's Large SUV Placements (LSUVP) that cause catastrophic climate change. The science is settled.

Large Igneous Province

Or, the area below my belt buckle.

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week. Try the veal, tip your wait staff.

Don't forget gases flowing and erupting naturally from the Russian permafrost .
How does one control those ?

I thought it was Large Displacement SUVs (LDSUVs)

People like to say our earth’s temp. is duke to the Sun but I suspect it is molten iron and fusion at the core, more likelely.

If it’s basaltic lava flows as was the case with the Russian Traps, nothing would work.

Re radioactive decay...lots of scientists agree...There are three main sources of heat in the deep earth: (1) heat from when the planet formed and accreted, which has not yet been lost; (2) frictional heating, caused by denser core material sinking to the center of the planet; and (3) heat from the decay of radioactive elements.

These “scientist” use the term positive feedback without the slightest understanding of positive feedback and its associated effects. Taken to the extreme it is like the butterfly effect. Should we kill all of the butterflies to prevent a hurricane? I don’t know but I am scared to move because if I shake the ground I may cause an earthquake.

Hats off to the Societe de Calcul mathematique SA.

I am not familiar with the geologic term "Russian Traps"
Can you explain ?

Positive feedback to me is just: “A produces more of B which in turn produces more of A”. You might say that heat produces melting methane which produces more heat. There are lots of instances of this in daily life which may continue until C intervenes to stop or redirect the process.

Also referred to as the Siberian Traps. It extended over much of what is now central Siberia.

I think the temp of the earth would be comparable to having an internal heat source with a cooled control layer complete with sauna which is being kept at just the right temp by the heat lamp (sun) and heating vents from the internal source for those created in the image of the Creator. :)
