We were still able to bring guns to school for afterschool hunting in the 80s.

We had a shooting range in my high school (late 70s).

There was a shooting range in the basement of my High School! It was short; less than 25 yards. Probably for ROTC.
It was turned into a storage room in recent years.
Times have changed!

A lot of us hunted on the same land our vice principal hunted on.
He worked with us on a big dairy farm during the summer and we all hunted there during the fall and winter.

Schools don't need armed guards, but IRS Taxpayer "Assistance" Centers need armed guards.
Got it.

I’m old enough that I took a rifle marksmanship course (as a gym credit believe it or not) in college. Imagine, allowing students on campus with loaded rifles...and teaching them safety, operation and cleaning of the rifle, sight picture, breathing, trigger pull, stances, how to use a sling... Oddly enough we never had any shootings, not even any accidents.

There’s hope. Here in TX my Son’s middle school offers ‘Outdoor Trails’. Kids learn about animals, nature, guns, how to shoot a compound bow, about hunting, camping, fishing, etc. A Dove Hunt was recently offered. It’s nothing short of awesome, and the boys and girls taking the class are lucky to have it.

In 1956, I was in fifth grade in a two room country school. Grades 1 to 6 in my room, and 7 to 8 in the other. There was a divider between the two rooms which was pulled back for group meetings. There was also a full basement where our 4-H meetings were held.
We had a tough gun policy: ALL GUNS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL MUST BE UNLOADED, AND KEPT IN THE COAT ROOM DURING CLASS.

Yet, when I looked out the window in High School Carlsbad NM (1962), I saw lots of cute girls in shorts practice sticking arrows in straw targets!
Maybe that is why my grades were so far down!

What a fantastic class or program! Here in the San Fran Bay Area, we build planter boxes in the schoolyards to hold certifiably correct soil and compost and teach the little snowflakes how to plant and water arugula.
