Microsoft preps Azure data lake flood gates for readiness (open source-friendly cloud services)

Microsoft will later this year release its open-source friendly lake for big-data analytics in the cloud.

Azure Data Lake Store – announced at Build in April – will be released as a preview, Microsoft said Monday. The store will be built on Apache YARN for developers and data scientists, to analyse information, and will use Azure HDInsight – a managed service for Hadoop, Spark, Storm and Hbase.

HDInsight was developed by Microsoft working with Ubuntu-shop Canonical and Hadoop spinner Hortonworks, Microsoft and Canonical said. In preparation for the preview Microsoft Monday threw the doors open on managed Linux clusters.

Microsoft’s Visual Studio Tools, meanwhile, have been updated to build, debug and tune for Hive queries and Storm topologies running in HDInsight.

YARN is the HDFS-compatible Apache project that makes MapReduce more flexible because it decouples resource management and scheduling from data processing.

The idea is you can support a broader variety of applications.

Microsoft’s data lake – a phrase now with huge currency among the big-data analytics and infrastructure providers – will feature analytics as a service.

Not exactly a "Windows" ping, but something a lot of Windows system admins and executives want to know about.

This is pretty neat -- more and more open-source and use of Linux in Redmond.

Microsoft Azure cloud services, open-source friendly ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Microsoft partnering with Ubuntu Linux. Who would-a thunk it?

Giving away Windows 10 and now this ... what is the endgame?

MS has been working closely with Chef and Docker for many months to extend Desired State Configuration to Linux platforms.

WOW! First Apple and now Ubuntu?

Nadella, put down the mouse and step slowly away from the computer! Now, what have you done with the REAL Microsoft CEO?

Nice! That makes great technical and business sense.

LOL!

Seriously, I have to read some of these articles carefully to convince myself they're not satire.

It's a brave new world, with Microsoft acting sanely and cooperatively.

I think the endgame is to sell cloud services to the widest possible market, and extend Powershell and Windows Server into that management space for heterogenous networks.

In my opinion... Microsoft's survival as a technical and commercial leader.

Ballmer took Microsoft down a deadly road for far too long. The Board finally bounced him, and it's a damn good thing.

Microsoft could have done their products, their users, and their stockholders a big favor by keel-hauling Ballmer 10 years ago when he was busily making an ass of himself and a travesty of his company's reputation, by doing insane things like calling Linux a "cancer" and trying to wipe it out with SCO as the stalking horse, and later by not taking the first iPhone seriously.

Time will tell whether Microsoft's massive ship can be turned around in time to avoid the dead end, but so far the indications are pretty good.

I'd blame Snover before Nadella.

What you say is true, and I'll add:

Windows server management and application deployment were designed (and work well) in the enterprise LAN. They do not do well in the cloud. To compete credibly in the cloud, Microsoft HAD to abandon their limited LAN-centric approach and do what the rest of the folks were doing. No one sane seriously thinks the way to manage a cloud server is with the Windows 8 Server 2012 GUI and Remote Desktop.

The emergence of the nano server, SSH coming to PowerShell, and similar changes are clear evidence that the inmates are no longer in charge of the asylum. For guys like me whose livelihood depend on administering networks of Windows both in the LAN and in the cloud, this is a Good Thing.

I think you’re right, MS is looking for the replacement for OS and app revenue, and cloud services provides many of the same desirable attributes.

I still dont see the ‘cooperatively’ part. It is still hell to run anything with open standards in shops that make extensive use of Active Directory.

What part of it is "hell"?
