BERLIN (AP) The "Made in Germany" label has stood for precision and reliability for decades, but since Volkswagen admitted to cheating on U.S. car emissions tests, many are questioning whether the automaker's problems could taint the rest of the country.
It's the second serious blow to a major German company's reputation in six months, following the tragic crash of a Germanwings jet that killed 150 people. Parent company Lufthansa has faced questions over why it failed to identify the psychological issues suffered by the pilot who intentionally flew the plane into a French mountain.
Will such crises tarnish the hard-won, valuable reputations for quality of other German brands, such as BMW, Daimler or Bosch?

Moot point, it already has. VW may very well go the way of Mitsubishi.
I need to do more digging on environmental effects on NO emissions to decide if I care.
It enhances it with me. It’s sort of like the teacher who is good at prepping kids for the SAT or “Race to Be Left Behind” or whatever it is.
The Krauts figured out a way to pass the test and make a car that runs better.
I hope it results in a clearance sale, I like that R type turbo dual clutch auto Golf, that does 0-60 in 4.8 secs.
Not really, the EPA is worse so its a wash....
Hell no!
Millions of US car owners are surreptitiously attempting to obtain this software for their cars.
It’s the American way!
Oh wait - that was General Motors?
And this is just some crap about emissions?
Never mind then.
Perhaps VW can agree to clean up the Animas River for the EPA and it will be a wash.
Goofy theory.
The technology functions exactly as it is supposed to, in the best German tradition.
It shows us how incompetent the US EPA is. All these VWs spewing supposed noxious gases not making a measurable difference in the atmosphere.
Uh no because everyone who does any research knows VWs are crap cars. When I was a kid we had a VW wagon during the 1970s and that thing was always in the shop. Just go check out sources like Consumer Reports and VWs are always at best just average in reliability.
I’m a VW diesel owner and fancier from way back.
When the EPA is abolished, along with many other assorted worthless agencies of a central socialist government, it will be meaningless.
How about Government Motors problem with their cars killing people by the score?
I’m also very fond of my Mercedes Bluetech.
Made in Germany vs Made by UAW
I think the opposite may be true. The EPA has done so many bad things to fuels, which now damage motors, and mileage, which is much less with mandated equipment, that the EPA may turn out to be the bad guy here. Who is the villain, a company what wanted us to get the most out of their products, or the EPA which wants them to be more expensive and perform worse?
I most certainly will not take my TDI in for modification.
On the other hand, when you sit in the dealership and see who the customers are, they tend to be older and now rich hippies and young uber-liberals. The practical who just want a good performing 40 mpg car may be the minority. I generally felt all alone in the crowded VW waiting room.
What does cheating on emissions testing have to do with precision and reliability?
I owned two Jettas in the early 90’s, both started giving me problems with only 60,000 miles on it. My brother bought a TDI wagon a few years ago, it blew the timing chain at 20,000...VW fixed it first time, not the second time,it cost him 4500....VW has been junk for a long time.
No, diesels are clean enough already.
I have a 2001 Camry manual. I swear it will never die.
