Subtitle: There are a number of reasons why Macs are worth considering as you migrate to Windows 10.

Microsoft's Windows 10 has finally been released and many users are looking for a new computer to take advantage of its new features. While it has been advertised that Windows 10 will perform properly on most laptops currently running Windows 7 or 8, we all know that to get the most of the many features and performance enhancements, you'll want the latest high-end laptops designed for the new OS.

As you consider your next PC purchase, here's something else to think about: Is it time to move to a Mac?...

There are a number of reasons why Macs are worth considering as you migrate to Windows 10...

We'll reportedly see [the Intel Skylake] processors used in upcoming MacBooks as well as PCs...

Price considerations. It is possible to find some decent Windows 10-ready laptops for about $500 most experts say you'll need a medium- to high-end laptop to make Windows 10 run smoothly. According to reviews, the most suitable models for Windows 10 are Dell's XPS 13 ($900-$1,600), Acer's Aspire R7 ($980-$1,300), and HP's Spectre x360 ($900-$1,400). All those 13-inch models will run Windows 10 smoothly, giving the user the performance expected on the new Microsoft OS. These price points get you in the same range as a MacBook...

According to some users, Windows 10 outperforms OS X when run on a MacBook Pro. (Uh, oh, Swordmaker!)

There are many advantages to choosing a Mac as your next Windows machine. MacBooks are well built, with a full-day battery life, excellent IPS displays, and great Apple support.

Full disclosure: I have six instances of Windows (7) installed on my computers at home. Two are VMs (virtual machines) so we ignore those. Of the four instances installed "on the metal", three are on Apple MacBook and MacMini hardware; the fourth is a Fujitsu laptop. For over seven years I have found that Apple hardware is unbeatable for running Windows.

That said, I'm a power user but not a gamer -- gaming rigs need to be customized and Apple doesn't address that market as well as the high-end PC manufacturers. But for the great majority of Windows users, Apple's computers are terrific platforms for running Windows.

Plus you get Mac OS X with the hardware, which itself is a great, solid operating system with fantastic applications.

In my opinion, the best of both worlds in one machine.

Chime in -- I'm going out to the kitchen to get popcorn...

Once again, some of the best hardware for Windows is made by Apple ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Hi Sword, you better get over here, it’s Windows 10 but look where it’s running!

I hope it’s an improvement over the standard Parallels

They’re talking about BootCamp, the Apple program for dual-booting. Parallels is for VMs, totally different way to run. BootCamp runs the Windows OS directly on the hardware, no virtualization.

Heh, that said, I have 5 PC’s running Windows 7 with no problems in a Video Storage network. Three are used for “Cloud” storage (32 TB), while two are used for recording TV shows and movies (One main and one backup).

All are Homemade - that only means you buy the components that you want and put them together (not exactly rocket science these days). They all are part of my local group and accessible to TV and other devices. I can watch any movie from any of the 5 PC’s on the TV. What more can you ask?

All run without problems and sleep when not used. Low Power requirements.

Configuring your own computers are the way to go...

So, it really is not about the company that makes the product as it is how you use them. Do your own thing...

For 30 years I designed and built my own hardware computers. Early ones from scratch, as in I designed and wire wrapped the CPU and disk controller circuits. Later ones I bought motherboards but customized the peripheral boards. By 2004 I was ready to let somebody else do that stuff. To each his own. :-)

Well congratulations... but...

I was involved in computers with the invent of the 8080 chip (Datapoint origins) and built my first computer from parts before most folks even knew computers existed..heh.

I was into hardware (wire wrapping and all, both private and commercially with Datapoint - the first computer company) in the early 70’s so not so sure that you beat me there but okay... You are way too late into this game...heh.

Okay, kidding a bit but the previous is true and I am a proud part of the 8080, Kermit protocol (Datapoint employee), Other modem protocols that I’ve forgotten developed by Datapoint personnel (old age is my excuse), anyway, stop the I know better than you protocol...

The end result is that today anybody can build multiple systems for anything that they want with no real knowledge about the setup other than what is available on the internet. That is how things have become so simple to folks today and that is a good thing!

No longer are computers a thing understood by the nerds...they are fast becoming a household appliance and that is a good thing!

I’m running 8.1 via bootcamp on 2013 hbo, and it’s the best laptop I’ve ever owned. It better be for the price lol.

I’m testing win10 on an old c2d 1.3Ghz laptop from 2009. Really snappy fast, but I’ll wait 6+ months before considering upgrades on my other pc’s.

Smart move... I tried Windows 10 on an Experimental PC and promptly (well after a week or so) went back to Windows 7. Was not bad but was not worth upgrading from 7..to me..

Same here. I didn’t find 10 way better yet. Unless there’s something I am missing.

“According to some users, Windows 10 outperforms OS X when run on a MacBook Pro”

Yeah, when a top end MacBook is compared to a medium level pc ...

We went through all this on a thread here last month.

“BootCamp runs the Windows OS directly on the hardware, no virtualization.”

No virtualization BUT ... Bootcamp runs a bios emulator to get Windows to interface with the hardware.

Can you please direct me to some reputable documentation (Apple or Tom's Hardware or something equally reliable) that supports that assertion? If it's true I want to read and learn about it. But frankly I have my doubts about its reality.

First, AFAIK, BootCamp doesn't "run" anything, much less an "emulator" (implying a level of abstraction between the Windows OS and the hardware). BootCamp is a set of low-level boot routines that get Windows to start loading in its normal manner, and a set of installed drivers specific to the Mac hardware components. That's not an emulator, that's drivers, just like Windows running in any PC.

Second, AFAIK, Windows does essentially nothing with a PC motherboard BIOS after it does its initial load. The motherboard hardware is handled by drivers. Well, BootCamp's drivers handle the Mac hardware. The environment is no different from any PC, as far as I can tell.

It just seems silly to me that since Windows doesn't use the BIOS once it's loaded and running, why in the world would Apple "emulate" a BIOS after the initial boot sequence?

Please enlighten me, and give me some URLs so I can read up on this. Thanks!

Hey, I was just excerpting the article... :-)

But the fact is such comparison statements are impossible to quantify. "Outperforms" is a sales term, 99 times out 100, and means nothing technical, without a long list of the components, test conditions, etc. etc.

Your point is taken.

I am still looking for a good technical site.

As I understand it, Windows is not able to directly interface Apple drives and must use Apple BIOS, or in this case Bootcamp Bios.

All this BIOS/UEFI stuff is making my head spin.
