The Rev. Jamal Bryant, who gave a rousing eulogy at Freddie Gray's funeral, says Baltimore's poor people must make demands on themselves, not just on government.
"If you've ever rented a car, you'll notice, no time when you've rented a car did you ever take a rental car to the car wash. Why? Because you didn't feel like it was yours. As a consequence, so many people in public housing don't really feel like that's theirs," Bryant told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday
"And so we've got to do something in terms of home ownership, in terms of economic development, and small businesses thriving. This is a complete overhaul for the city of Baltimore."
Baltimore's public housing agency says it serves nearly 20,000 residents in approximately 11,000 units, including 28 family developments, 19 mixed population buildings, two senior buildings and at scattered sites throughout the city.
The housing agency's Office of Resident Services says it promotes "self-sufficiency and economic independence" through services such as job-search assistance and placements, social and health services, literacy education, job training, and youth activities." (For the record, the agency has declared June 2015 as "Empowerment Month.")

Incidentally, this mentality is the source of the “it’s just property” line. Not worth defending if you’re used to not having any.
Well then leave the area, get a job and an apartment of your own....to stupid to figure that out???????????
Public housing was never intended to be ‘theirs’. It’s original intent was to give struggling citizens a reprieve to get back on their feet and into the workforce. It was intended to help those who were unable to work have shelter.
it isn’t their’s.
There in lies the problem . We have a segment of the population which keeps taking and wants more without ever thinking that others pay for what they demand .
‘People in Public Housing Don’t Really Feel Like That’s Theirs’
Maybe that’s BECAUSE IT’S NOT!
That EBT $$$ they spend on booze and drugs isn’t theirs either.
Correct, it's rented from the government and subsidized by the "income rape" of other citizens.
HUD calculates there rent. So the Pastor's statement is wrong from the get go.
Sounds like another round of sub-prime mortgage loans would fill the bill. /sarc
Duh, it’s not theirs! But, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t treat as if it was. I guess that animals aren’t the only ones that defecate in their dens...............Sorry I meant four legged animals.
They have nothing invested in the property so they don’t care. Even if you gave them a house, they wouldn’t take care of it because they have never had to in their lives.
Didn’t Jack Kemp talk about this 20 years ago? (Oh I forgot, he was a Republican)
That's because it isn't. And just giving it to them doesn't help much ... because they didn't EARN it.
What it comes down to is that in the US you have a choice. You can do nothing and live the narcissistic dream and live in government housing that is not yours, or you can work, maybe very, very hard, for something that becomes yours.
But the former complaining that it doesn’t feel like it is “theirs” is not only comical, but not to be taken seriously as a thinking human being.
We need some kind of program for people that can’t afford to buy a house to borrow money to buy a house....
BECAUSE IT ISN’T THEIRS.
It’s been given to them, paid for by confiscating, at gunpoint, money from people who actually earned it.
Just say “thank you” and strive to NOT live off of others.
That EBT $$$ they spend on booze and drugs isnt theirs either.
Neither is their "free" medical care....
Well maybe you don’t own the apartment. But, you are the one who lives there. You are the one who has to live with the trash and graffiti and the stench. Take a little pride in your residence even if you don’t own it.
Well, it ain't, dumbass.
So howze about getting the hell out of the crap hole, move to a place that has some semblance of economic opportunity and work and save until you can buy your own damned place.
That's what I did...it's what millions of Americans have done, time after time.
It's not impossible, unless you have the mindset that it's easier to stand on the corner in the 'hood and sell dope and your sister and wait for a "protest" to occur so you can restock your liquor cabinet and update your big screen.
I have no sympathy.
