Incidentally, this mentality is the source of the “it’s just property” line. Not worth defending if you’re used to not having any.

Public housing was never intended to be ‘theirs’. It’s original intent was to give struggling citizens a reprieve to get back on their feet and into the workforce. It was intended to help those who were unable to work have shelter.

"As a consequence, so many people in public housing don't really feel like that's theirs"

That's because it's not theirs. People that actually WORK for a living subsidize the housing through income rape.

‘People in Public Housing Don’t Really Feel Like That’s Theirs’

Maybe that’s BECAUSE IT’S NOT!

That EBT $$$ they spend on booze and drugs isn’t theirs either.

"And so we've got to do something in terms of home ownership, in terms of economic development, and small businesses thriving".

Sounds like another round of sub-prime mortgage loans would fill the bill. /sarc

Duh, it’s not theirs! But, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t treat as if it was. I guess that animals aren’t the only ones that defecate in their dens...............Sorry I meant four legged animals.

They have nothing invested in the property so they don’t care. Even if you gave them a house, they wouldn’t take care of it because they have never had to in their lives.

Didn’t Jack Kemp talk about this 20 years ago? (Oh I forgot, he was a Republican)

many people in public housing don't really feel like that's theirs,

That's because it isn't. And just giving it to them doesn't help much ... because they didn't EARN it.

We need some kind of program for people that can’t afford to buy a house to borrow money to buy a house....

BECAUSE IT ISN’T THEIRS.

It’s been given to them, paid for by confiscating, at gunpoint, money from people who actually earned it.

Just say “thank you” and strive to NOT live off of others.

Well maybe you don’t own the apartment. But, you are the one who lives there. You are the one who has to live with the trash and graffiti and the stench. Take a little pride in your residence even if you don’t own it.

...so many people in public housing don't really feel like that's theirs

Well, it ain't, dumbass.

So howze about getting the hell out of the crap hole, move to a place that has some semblance of economic opportunity and work and save until you can buy your own damned place.

That's what I did...it's what millions of Americans have done, time after time.

It's not impossible, unless you have the mindset that it's easier to stand on the corner in the 'hood and sell dope and your sister and wait for a "protest" to occur so you can restock your liquor cabinet and update your big screen.

I have no sympathy.

There are apartment communities all over this country where the residents pay rent and do not own the units. And yet they are not trashed. They are well cared for. This has more to do with lack of gratitude, laziness, lack of pride, unwillingness to take responsibility for oneself, self pity, and the drug and thug culture.

Maybe we should force banks to give low/no income people the chance to buy a house with no down payment and not be held responsible for making the payments? /sarc

I don’t know about the good pastor, but when I rent a car or any other item I actually strive to treat it well. Guess I have my upbringing to blame for that.

Of course they don’t feel the apartment is theirs. It’s not theirs. They don’t own it.

And giving them mortgages will make them feel the property is theirs? LOL Their landlord will be the bank instead of the government.

When our country was young only property owners were allowed to vote. Now we have voters who are illiterate and some are not even citizens.
