Virgin America threw a St. Patrick's Day send-off this morning for a dozen Chihuahuas at San Francisco International Airport before airlifting the dogs to Newark Liberty International Airport, where they'll be put up for adoption in the New York area.
Volunteers escorted the dogs onto the plane for its 8 a.m. departure and were posting live in-flight updates to the airline's Instagram and Twitter feeds until their anticipated arrival at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
Dubbed #OperationChihuahua, the event is Virgin America's sixth such "airlift" in partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals since 2010. So far, they've transported more than 80 dogs, according to airline spokeswoman Patricia Condon.
Shelters in California are often overpopulated with the tiny dogs, but there's a high demand for Chihuahuas in New York City, according to Gail Buchwald, senior vice president for the ASPCA adoption center.
Virgin America is also launching a "Lucky Dog" sale on airfare, starting at $49 one way to destinations in the airline's western region, with taxes and fees included. Virgin America will donate $10 from each ticket sold to the San Francisco Department of Animal Care and Control.
Tickets must be purchased by 9:59 p.m. PDT Thursday and the flights must occur between April 7 and June 10.
You can’t have too many chihuahuas ...
It’s true.
I have three helping me get ready for bed: Nikki, Lula and Fidel.
I am changing the decor I the bathroomsnd they are assisting.
Pups are lucky they did not get discovered as a substitute for gerbils in San Fagsicko.
SFTo NY? Dunno.
Chihuahuas seek warmth first, ... Then food.
If you place a heating pad on the floor and turn it on, it is very popular.
'I thought that one bitch was a little too yappy,' said one of the handlers who noticed the error."
A dozen Chihuahuas left California today. That’s a good start.
Most overbred dog ever. Everyone and their mother in the southwest thinks they’ll get rich selling them, so backyard puppy-mills are commonplace. Shelters and pounds are full of them.
Cringing, neurotic, ‘bitey’, bat-eared, bug-eyed, yapping rats with thyroid problems ...
We need to secure the border better...
My thought too! GMTA..
Hey, maybe somebody can gin up a cartoon of gerbils racing to the rooftop of the Virgin Airlines Embassy (ala Saigon) pleading to get on the last helicopter out of there!
“[tearful sniffle] I don’t know what’s wrong! Whyyy can’t I find a man?”
Rats with long legs.
Doggie ping.
I wish they’d have an airlift to Milwaukee for Golden Retrievers.
Petfinder is showing 51 golden retrievers and GR mixes within 100 miles of Milwaukee. :)
Some of the goldens are seniors; I can’t understand how someone could give up an old dog.
Send them here to Michigan, they make great bait for muskie fishing.......
I rescued a female Chorkie last year..never heard of a Chorkie until then...she’s a blast...in 60 years..I never had a dog smaller than a Dobie...so it’s a big change..but she is perfect for an apartment...I named her Reagan...
I went to our shelter awhile back with my neighbor who was looking for a dog. Nothing but pit Xs and Chihuahua Xs.
Probably because our town is overrun with Mexicans.
