The Makarov Is the Elvis of Pistols
War is Boring ^ | February 5, 2015 | Paul Richard Huard

In 2002, former British Army soldier Colin Berry was in Afghanistan working as an agent for MI6, the United Kingdom’s secret intelligence service.

Berry’s mission was to buy as many Stinger and Blowpipe man-portable surface-to-air missiles as he could before they wound up in Al Qaeda’s arsenal.

Western government had given the weapons to the Afghan mujahedeen in the 1980s to help them shoot down Soviet attack helicopters. But now governments worried the SAMs, in terrorists’ hands, could shoot down civilian airliners.

Are we talking the skinny early Elvis, or the fat, bloated elder Elvis?

At one point, I had a Czech clone of the Mak. It had an unbelievably stiff trigger pull in double action - but shot just fine when you cocked the hammer manually. I considered it unsuitable for a CC backup due to the double action stiffness, so sold it back to the guy I bought it from.

How so? Ubiquity?

Other than that I don't get it.

Either we're going to get some lyrics from "Elvis is everywhere" by Mojo Nixon and the toad lickers or this article ain't gonna make no sense a'tall. I suppose I'll have to go look at it.

So in essence you’re saying Michael J. Fox doesn’t own a Makarov...

Yes, now that you mention it that would implicitly be a true statement.

My brother in law gave me an East German model a few years ago. I liked it except the back of the slide caught my thumb knuckle when firing so I gave it back. The 9x18 round definitely has stopping power that’s for sure. They are collectable though. I think he ended up selling it for around $500 and wishes he had it back.

But Elvis didn’t have a de-cocker. My .380 Mak is a great little shooter. Kind of a light round for self defense, but the gun has some weight and keeps the recoil manageable, can get off multiple rounds on target, pretty quick.

Easy take down/assembly. Reliable. Some would say a bit underpowered. I use CORBON in mine. Accurate to a point.

**It had an unbelievably stiff trigger pull in double action***

No worse than a Walther PPK/S. I’m so used to cocking the hammer I don’t worry about it. Too much training with a 1911 .45 and Browning Hi-Power. Kind of like fanning an old Colt .45 peacemaker for the first shot.

Now, the SCCY 9MM is really stiff and is double action only.

Remember the FAMILY TIES anti-gun episode? The family buys a gun for protection, it lays on the floor and everyone is afraid to touch it.
“IT” almost kills a family member so..
they give it to the police to destroy.

Problem with the Mak is you need to remember the safety has to be UP FOR IT TO FIRE.
Mine was so cheap if some overbearing cop takes it away from you, you are not out much.

The author called it a “small automatic pistol”.
It is a semi-automatic pistol. (at least the one I own).

“I liked it except the back of the slide caught my thumb knuckle when firing so I gave it back.”

Your thumb should not be anywhere near the back of the slide when shooting ANY automatic. Seriously. My b-n-l forgot this and a slide laid his thumb open to the bone. ANY semi auto can mess you up if you have your thumb over the back of your other hand. Never ever ever do that.

My thumb wasn’t “over” the slide. It wrapped around the left side of the grip as normal. Kinda hard to explain but the knuckle I am referring to is the one closest to the wrist where the thumb meets the hand(slide would skin it on top). Got small hands (among other things) and I attribute it to that. Don’t have that problem with any other semi I’ve ever fired, and I’ve fired my share of others........ Hope that made sense.

I’ve got a brace of C82s that I love. Best $200 pistol ever.
