iPhone 5 Was The Top Smartphone Camera On Flickr In 2014

Yahoo’s Flickr is the place that many people go to save and share their digital photographs, and has long been where people upload their best shots. That means that Flickr has quite a lot of interesting information on which cameras are being used thanks to the EXIF data that is embedded in the images uploaded to its website.

Over the last few years Flickr has been taking that information and pulling it all together in order to see which cameras are being used most amongst those who take advantage of the service. Granted, people may be removing the EXIF data to some extent, but given the absence of any better metrics we’re happy to go along with Flickr here.

Based on Flickr’s numbers and just as it was in year 2013, the iPhone 5 is the camera that was responsible for the majority of photographs uploaded to Flickr during 2014. In fact, the iPhone 5 – a phone now two years old – is the most used camera on the planet as far as Flickr uploads go with 3.3% of uploads. Even the iPhone 4s and rather aged iPhone 4 beating the Cannon EOS 7D into fourth place in the most used camera stakes.

When broken down into just smartphones, the iPhone 5 makes up over 10% of all Flickr uploads while the first non-Apple handset is the Samsung Galaxy S3 with just 1.2% in fifth place.

Oh, and it turns out that even those people who use iPads to take photos like to upload them to Flickr. Just under one percent of all mobile cameras used were iPads, with the iPad mini responsible for 0.6% of mobile photos.

The complete chart of the rankings is as follows:

The numbers are rather strange really, since the iPhone 5s, which has a brilliant iSight camera out of the box is nowhere to be seen. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on the other hand are fairly new smartphones from Apple to make it to the chart, so we’ll excuse those handsets for the time being.

If you’re a Flickr user, do share with us which camera, phone or tablet you’re using to upload your photos? Do share with us in the comments section below, we love to hear from your guys.

Given the numbers for the iPhone 5, they must be including the iPhone 5s into the iPhone 5 numbers. . . that is the only thing that makes any sense in their charts. The iPhone 4 and 4s are listed, and even the 5c, as are the iPhone 6 and 6plus, so the 5s has to be there somewhere! 26.3% of the mobile device cameras used on Flickr were iOS devices, occupying the seven of the top ten in that category: first, second, third, fourth, seventh, eighth, and tenth positions. — Swordmaker

Flickr says that Apple iPhone 5 (possibly including 5s) was the top used camera phone on their service in 2014. . . certainly the entire Apple iOS line was the number one uploading manufacturer of pictures to Flickr. . . accounting for 26.3% of the pictures from that category and seven of the top ten positions, including the first four. — PING!

Interesting. Had they broken out the iPhone 5s from the 10.6% attributed to the iPhone 5, given that the lower selling iPhone 5C is in the fourth position, Apple iPhones probably have taken all FIVE top positions, but still only seven of the top ten slots as the other makers would drop down a slot and the iPad mini at 0.6% would drop off.

Saw that. . . but then the guys who send selfies are more likely to be narcissists anyway and START with psychopathic tendencies to begin with. So which came first, the selfie, or the psychopathy? Chicken or egg? Other studies, however, have shown that women and girls selfie about three or four to one to men and boys. I wonder what psychological problems THEY have. . . LOL!

Doesn’t that infer that most of the remainder were Android phones?

Yes, but from multiple makers. . . not from ONE maker. . . At last count there were approximately 225 Android phone makers. There is only one iOS device makers who has more than one quarter of Flickr's usage in the mobile phone usage. . . and took the top 3 spots among ALL cameras used on Flickr showing 6.7% usage, compared to Nikon's 2.8% and Canon's 2.5% (a combined 5.3% making up the rest of the top 10). . . where not one other mobile device makes the cut, let alone any Android phones.

If you’re a Flickr user, do share with us which camera, phone or tablet you’re using to upload your photos?

My camera wasn't even on any of the top anything. I'm still shooting with the Canon EOS-20D and still happy with it. I posted some photos on another thread. I noticed the 40D is better but when I have something I like, I tend to hang onto it for a long time. And I would like one with HD video which you have to go even higher, or the Rebel line, or another brand.

So I transfer my photos via a USB to my imac, always process in Photoshop and downsize, and upload via a DSL connection.

That's one thing that infuriates me about iphone photos. People can't or won't downsize them and I get these huge photos clogging my mailbox to the point emails bounce, and I have to delete both the photo email and empty the trash on my server. One person who sends me lots of photos which I enjoy is courteous and savvy enough to resize hers, I think she uses mac iphoto.

Now the iphone cameras in good hands take remarkably good photos for what they are. They are in a class by themselves. I'm not impressed with the video and low light seems to have improved some because surely the Facebook young 'uns who are shooting away every day their kids and posting them don't know anything but frame the subject (if possible) and click.

Another advantage to an iphone is you can grab shots very fast or not get them at all whereas the other cameras, except the pocket-type digitals, take some time to ready, are a lot to tote around so you don't take them unless you intend taking photos, and many venues do not allow any cameras but cell phone users can get away with a lot.

Eventually but not for some time, will an iphone camera be truly competitive with my 20D with some top quality lenses. My camera is dated but my lenses have held their value, a good investment really, if you take care of them.

Anyway, I've never owned a cell phone, never wanted to, was mad when I did price an iphone and realized how much to have to spend a month for service. I could change my mind though. I saw how text messaging works and find it annoying. It's annoying when people are rude and won't turn them off. It's annoying that cell phones in particular and computers in general have impacted our social interactions in both positive and negative ways.

Still iphones are amazing and coveted around the world in a way I can't think any other desired consumer product has.

Maybe I'm wrong about some things in my previous post.

I have a few questions.

Can you zoom with an iphone?

Can you bump up ISO to get better indoor or low light shots?

Does it have a flash and correct for red eye?

Can you do close ups?

Do they have image stabilization?

Can I resize a photo and upload without running it through some photo editing software so they are sized for web viewing?

What didn't I ask about it that I should have? I'm going to bed but will check back some time tomorrow. Nite all.

Yes, you can zoom with an iPhone.

Can you bump up ISO to get better indoor or low light shots?

Yes, you can adjust an amazing amount of settings in pre-shoot and post-shoot in the camera and in the phone.

Does it have a flash and correct for red eye?

Can you do close ups?

Do they have image stabilization?

Yes, it has a double flash set up. . . and does more than that. The iPhone 6 has a true-tone dual LED flash that has a White LED and an Amber LED that can do 1000 different color temperatures. The 6plus has optical image stabilization (done with lenses) built in while the 6 only has electronic image stabilization. . . and they both have 240 frame per second slo-mo video. You can take pictures in color and then edit them right in the camera, cropping, red-eye removal, color correction, change to B/W, sepia, HDR automatic adjustment between to images to select the best exposure and combine, close ups are possible, but as you know the best close-ups are done with a good medium range telephoto lens for greater depth of field. The closer you focus, the shorter the depth of field. Resizing both by cropping and saving for specific web purposes are available in phone. . . and sharing from the camera roll or iCloud or any album is dead easy. . . and automatically adjusted for the size appropriate.

Of the things you haven't asked, there are professional photographers that are using the iPhone as their sole camera. A full length feature film has been filmed entirely on iPhones. . . and many news papers are replacing their large format cameras with iPhones as are news crews for TV. Video is in 1080P HD. . . iPhoto shot pictures have appeared on the covers of major magazines . . . including Time, National Geographic, People, and several others.

The best camera is the camera you have with you when you need one.

Go get an iPhone 6. You will never look back.

The worse part was the initial setup. It took about 4 hours with iTunes, updates, etc.... That was it though. It’s been good ever since.

The 20D was my first DSLR and loved it. I used it for several years as a virtual tour camera and made a few bucks with it. I haven’t used flickr in years but most of what’s there is from the 20d era.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tysonneil/

I’ve had a 50D, T2i, and 60D which is being transitioned away from to Lumix. Great cameras. I went lumix for 4K. Canon doesn’t make an affordable 4K HDSLR body.

The 60D and a lens are Ebay now plus one other. They will find good homes I’m sure.

The part I love is when working on complicated stuff like a carburetor (ok I’m old LOL).
You can photo every step of disassembly and have it right at hand for the rebuild.

Doesn’t that infer that most of the remainder were Android phones?

It would imply (sorry, pet peeve) that. It is interesting, but not very surprising, that WinPhone doesn't make an appearance, despite Nokia pitching its phones based entirely on the camera.

No kidding. And with the built in flash you can take snaps of hidden areas you can’t see as long as your arms can reach.

Would have made life a lot easier way back when to have had one of these.

Speeds up locating stuff at the auto parts store when you can show the counter man a photo to verify getting the correct part.

Nothing wrong with the word, just the way I used it... I should have said “Couldn’t one infer that most of the remainder were Android phones?”

I would infer from the minuscule market share those WinPhones garnered that any secondary market share at Flickr, since there are other photo storage and sharing options, would be even smaller.

Thank you for the great review. I had no idea. I will certainly start considering that option. It wouldn't hurt to have an emergency phone anyway to carry with me. I can turn off the ringer and probably get voice messages. I hate ringing phones except just if I am expecting a call.

I will look at some sample photos by people who know how to properly operate the camera feature. I'm glad i haven't socked a lot of money for some years into my dslr.

If you can do all that now, just imagine what the the future can bring.

Thank you so much!
