Very nice. Needed that, thank you
wow.....
Definite A+ for effort. The first time I ever heard it arranged in a minor key. There were segments where it seemed to be being sung in harmonies as-written by GFH, but it would quickly switch back to intentionally having the sopranos, and maybe others, singing flat.
Someone put a lot of time and effort into taking GFH’s work and rearranging it with inharmonious dischords, so that throughout the performance my senses were straining to hear the voices slide back into perfect harmony where they belonged; which they never did.
And as a former choir-singer (Bass) I can only imagine the difficulty of the higher registers singing flat when their senses want to sing in harmony; or for the voices whose parts were arranged as per GFH holding their parts, on key, while a section nearby is intentionally singing flat.
This is probably some “brave new” avante garde style of arranging, which is foreign to an unwashed Philistine such as I.
The satellite photography was fantastic.
P.S. I understand this was performed by 2 persons. How many layers of recording did it take to complete the package?
That does alleviate the difficulty of the various voices holding key. But it doesn’t help the listener, who is straining every nerve, wishing for the voices to come into harmony, which they seldom did.
I had the same experience that you had....and i had to stop listening.
FTR, I made a multi-track recording of The Hallelujah Chorus back in 2000, using a Yamaha AW1680 Workstation, and one singer...me! :-) I had just been fired from my job, and it took me seven hours to record all the parts.
(I am a Dramatic Coloratura, and can sing baritone if i have to! LOL!)
Coloratura. Isn’t that a voice that can reach amazing heights? And can also sing barry? You must have quite a range. I have well over 2 octaves. Used to sing church solos on TV, but gradually ruined my singing voice, abusing it auctioneering 5 days per week.
Praise Jesus anyhow!
I agree. When I first clicked on it, I thought I read it was the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but it only took a second or two listening to it to tell it wasn’t. Whoever put the piece together, did a decent job editing the video, but a terrible job picking the music (I wonder if they did the music themselves?).
When i was in my 40’s, I had a five octave range. Now it is only three octaves, but my voice has lasted well into my senior years because of 15 years of Industrial Strength Vocal Training. Now i train kids with my technique, and i have seen some wonderful things happen with them! :-)
I play bass in church and lead the singing at the same time, and provide harmonies when needed. (Today was especially challenging, as the Church band did traditional Christmas Music. We usually do Christian Blues! LOL!)
