ZURICH, Switzerland, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A Swiss animal protection group is proposing a one-cat limit for the country's households to protect local wildlife preyed on by the felines.

The Zurcher Tierschutz group in Zurich suggested the country's cat population needs to be controlled due to the threats felines pose to wildlife including birds, lizards, amphibians and small mammals.

The group said there are an estimated 1.4 million cats in the country of 8.1 million people and measures are needed to control the cat population to protect local wildlife. The group suggested a limit be put on cat ownership to allow only one feline per household.

Cats are killing machines, they are like wind farms in that way.

With 1 cat for every 7 people, it sounds like that it already is there, with no legislation needed.

lol - yes. I have two. One is a 22 yr old siamese ... the other is a 9 yr old calico terror. She brings lizards, spotted owl and golden cheeked warblers up to the back porch for inspection ... her favorite are Blue Jays.
Bad girl. ;o)

I like cats and know them well.

Thank God they are so much smaller than us, even our beloved cats sometimes give us that look, like they have never seen us before, and are appraising us as lunch.

I once had five of them at one time. That was too many cats; I could not give each of them the attention they craved and one was the outcast everyone else picked on.

I now have two litter-sisters. They get along well, and keep each other company when I am not home to entertain them.

They never go outside. They have great window perches from which to chatter at birds.

How about a simpler suggestion. Keep your cats inside. That will limit the number you have and increase dramatically the health and life expectancy.

I just put down my buddy of 19 years today. He was an ARDS survivor 9 years ago and I appreciated every moment with him since then.

I have been searching and searching for geriatric care requirements for very old cats. I found this is unchartered territory, because the need is very new. Cats are living much longer and I believe it is because we are keeping them indoors, away from accidental risks, disease and predators. Vet care probably also adds to it.

Just don't leave them wild outdoors, but maybe in a confined property area.

Funny, today was one of the hardest decisions of my life.

Keep them indoors.

A picture of him from exactly a year ago. He is a cat and loves when we change bedding. Why? He is a cat.

Oh no!! Unacceptable. Cats are quite social and do better with two or three in a household (though they get along best if they all come from one litter). Kitties get lonely alone. :( The real answer to them preying on wildlife is to keep them indoors where they belong!

I’m so sorry about your cat. It’s very hard to lose a friend of so many years, especially when they’re so affectionate and engaging. I’m sure your beautiful kitty had a wonderful time with you!! I hope another exceptional kitty comes into your life when you’re ready for it.

I agree re inside cats, but some places outside or outside/inside cats are the norm. *shrug*

Thank you.

The hardest decision was knowing when it was time. I have three others (now old and geriatric). It was odd. Last December I looked around and couldn't figure out how they all got so old.

My Friend was special. Just one of those cats that is both lovable and a true cat. A once in a lifetime time pet. Yeah. I am really surprised how bad it hurts.

Thank you again.
