Ronald Reagan showed why he was legendary on the campaign trail with a humdinger he told before the Republican Governors Club Dinner on October 4, 1988.
Former Congressman Prentiss Walker dropped in on a farm and introduced himself as a Republican candidate, Reagan began his joke...

Excellent!
I love watching that from time to time.
A classic!
It is precisely this type of confidence in America and Americans that won the cold-war fro him.
To this day, I will point to the single Reagan quip during his “sound check” (”The bombing starts in 5 minutes.”) as RWR’s defining moment.
The Russians knew that, while said in jest, it provided abject confidence in the resolve of the American people.
Post the joke.
! *grin!*
So what was the joke?
Former Congressman Prentiss Walker dropped in on a farm and introduced himself as a Republican candidate, Reagan began his joke, And as he tells it, the farmers eyes lit up, and then he said, Wait til I get my wife. Weve never seen a Republican before. And a few minutes later he was back with his wife, and they asked Prentiss if he wouldnt give them a speech.
Well, he looked around for a kind of a podium, something to stand on, he continued, and then the only thing available was a pile of that stuff that the late Mrs. Truman said it had taken her 35 years to get Harry to call fertilizer. So, he stepped up on that and made his speech.
And apparently he won them over. And they told him it was the first time theyd ever heard a Republican. And he says, Thats okay. Thats the first time Ive ever given a speech from a Democratic platform.’

Where were the Romney and McCain advisors getting the vapors over him alienating the "moderate vote" at the time?

Thanks much. :)
(Psst. I’ve been told that “the vapors” is an old-fashioned descriptor of what we now call “passing gas” by some southern girls I knew. Just FYI.)
Gawd he was hilarious, confident and an such inspiration.
Gotta go back to the library.
what an awesome, awesome day.
Cept at the end of the day standing next to his grave surveying the valley below, recalling my day long experience and his impact on my life, I broke down in tears.
beautiful and I wish I had his knack for joke telling.
I am “Proud to be an American”.
That you didn’t get it...

LOL
I always liked the Mondale debate retort.
I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I will not exploit my opponents relative youth and inexperience.
Even Mondale burst out laughing at that line. Even though he didn’t mean to. I’ve always believed that line right there assured the American people that Reagan was still up to the challenge and helped him win in a landslide.
Yep, quick wit and good humor goes a long way. It also says you're "sharp".
Pretty much describes the GOPe advisors, doesn’t it?
You were drinking sweet teat while enjoying their purfume?
Watching that clip I’m reminded of why he was so hated and feared by the left. The danger they must have felt from a man like him. I will always miss him.
