Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as “remarkable”.

Although fasting diets have been criticized by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection.

Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy. […]

Scientists found that prolonged fasting also reduced the enzyme PKA, which is linked to aging and a hormone which increases cancer risk and tumour growth. …

Not surprising. The body views fasting as a stressors and act to protect itself by purging garbage from its system.

LOL…how long before we read that decreased breathing not only helps fight greenhouse gases, but scientists have found that it grows hair and increases the sex drive”? These studies are the stuff that parody is made of

Well that's good news for school kids as they are already fasting under Mooshelles diet plan.

I understand fasting does wonders for your appetite.

“Scientists found that prolonged fasting also reduced the enzyme PKA, which is linked to ageing and a hormone which increases cancer risk and tumour growth.”

This is an interesting statement.

Even before my mother was diagnosed with cancer, she had already gone off eating, and that was not normal for her. I was worried that she got so little nutrition. I have heard that this is typical in people suffering with cancer.

Maybe, it's a natural reaction of the body to fight the cancer and should be encouraged.

When I stopped eating to lose weight, I was surrounded by people who were convinced that I was committing suicide. I ignored them. I lost weight. I was much healthier than I was when I was overweight.

I’m not fasting in the sense of the word, but I AM cutting back on my intake of food and I find I am more susceptible to a cold during this globull warming stage of the earth.

How long did you stop eating for and how much did you lose when you “finished?” I’m not surprised people would think you were doing that.

You may be cutting off a Vitamin C item.

They have cough lozenges that fulfill your daily requirement and only have 15 calories.

Well I can hardly fast for 3 hours. Fasting does have its benefits though helping the body rid itself of toxins. Sometimes if I eat a heavy meal the next day is usually light on the food crave. Works for me as all of my life never but a few pounds over ideal weight here and there. French toast breakfast here I come.

Ignoring your kids when your older (I'm 70) is sure a pain in the butt. They forgot we took care of them for 20 years and they survived.

Most of us are fortunate enough to know what we're doing. Why do we have to convince our kids?

We don't.

If anyone has the right to do whatever he damn well pleases it's those who have taken care of their families, children, and themselves and reached retirement age.

One--of many--advantages of old age is the right to say and do whatever you damn well please.

Our DIL just spent several days in the hospital due to a serious infection. They didn’t feed her for at least three of those days, using an IV to keep her hydrated and administer the super antibiotics etc. She did get better. I just sent them this article.

Old age means shedding moral restraint? or do you just mean outspokenness?

There has been an abundance of evidence with lab animals and men, known for many years, that periodic fasting increases life span. The link to the immune system appears to be the new finding here.

Define “scientists” for the purpose of this article. Do they mean scientists in the true sense of the word, or is this another example of verbicide? Are these “scientists” the same “scientists” who claim I am causing global warming?

Sad that science has come to this, hasn’t it. Well, iconoclasty was inevitable, what with leftists making a false god of it. Thanks to the confusion resulting, I sure can’t come up with an answer.
