Danish Zoo, Reviled in the Death of a Giraffe, Kills 4 Lions
NYT ^ | March 26, 2014 | DAN BILEFSKY

Denmark, the land of enchanting fairy tales and liberal social values, is becoming known as the land of dead zoo animals.

The Copenhagen Zoo, which generated global outrage last month when it killed a healthy 18-month-old giraffe named Marius, said it had to euthanize four lions this week to clear the path for a newly arrived young male lion. The zoo’s decision created a backlash on social media on Wednesday, with some calling the zoo’s staff members “serial killers” and “murderers.”

Didn't the giraffe they euthanized get feed to the lions?

Well, it’s not like other zoos wouldn’t take in the critters they are killing off. Damn shame.

"It’s better for the animal to have a good life than to live" and have a bad life, [Jesper Mohring-Jensen] said by phone.

Thst's all well and good, Jesper, until they get around to judging your quality of life. Perhaps then you would change your tune.

Why do some zoos euthanize healthy animals?

European zoos often put down healthy animals to maintain genetic diversity in a species’ population, but the practice doesn’t occur in U.S. zoos. Why? It all comes down to birth control.

Check me, but this has caused more global outrage than Putin’s taking of Crimea.

It remains to be seen if they can survive the bad press and outrage.

“It’s better for the animal to have a good life than to live” and have a bad life, he said by phone. “That is the Danish view, which is different from the American view. The discussion can sometimes become unscientific and based more on feelings than understanding of animals. Nature doesn’t have the same concept of justice as humans.”

Nature's concept of justice! Total nonsense. You killed the animals to avoid some potential problems for the zoo, and perhaps because you enjoyed it. You did not do it to give a better life to the animals you killed.

If it takes lioncide to get them to think about the issue, then it does.

I think they made Ceiling Cat cry.

Couldn’t they just give the lions to other zoos? It just seems so sad to put down a healthy cat....

They used to have a zoo in the Tower of London. Really. Foreign leaders would gift the Brits with wild animals from their countries, and the Brits didn’t know what to do with them, so they kept them in the tower, in rather horrid conditions. If you brought along a cat or dog you didn’t want to feed the lions you got free admission.

I watched this very interesting documentary recently called “Secrets of the Tower” and it was fascinating - that was just one of the things in it I did not know.
