Reading the short version of Masha Gessen’s autobiography in her column, I cannot help but think she spends a great deal of her time looking for something, anything that can and will offend her. My guess is, if the local blacks had not said something to her daughter, she would have kept looking until she made sure someone else did.

The irony, which ought to get pointed out more often, is that it is RACIST to claim that minorities are INCAPABLE of RACISM. Simply emphasize the word "INCAPABLE" to make the point.

The idea that only the majority are ABLE to commit acts of racism, is a way of holding that group out as being superior, and therefore more accountABLE for their actions. It is a way of saying that this other group, these minorities are NOT ABLE to be held up to the same standards of behavior. It is in this way that a smug, racists, liberal majority sends out their message that they consider minorities to be inferior, and therefore LESS ABLE to act upon the same moral standards as the rest of us.
