A Valencia County woman was killed by a pit bull on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the woman's home off Crawford Road in Jarales, just south of Belen.

According to the Valencia County Sheriff's Department, the woman's son came home and found his mother dead from the attack. He killed the dog immediately following the attack.

One of them just snapped and killed her is all we know for sure.

All too common with pit bulls. I'm not sure why the dog lovers who can see that there is so much difference in dog form across breeds, find it so hard to grasp the concept that there can be equally great differences in temperment too.

and a bit cruel

No. Cruel would have been if her dog had killed the child next door.

Yup. If someone planted landmines in their front yard we would be happier if they blew up the owner rather than some pour girlscout selling cookies. This is a lot like that.

A well trained dog does not pull on the leash at all.

When I see a pit the leash I don't think, "oh how well trained."

I mentally review which carry gun I have and what the fastest draw will be.

When Security Companies call soliciting I tell them I do not need their services as I have a killer Chihuahua. Stops them dead in their tracks. Haven’t had one incident since we got him eight years ago...he’s good...he’s very good.

I give up. arguing with drunks, morons, and pit bull lovers is a waste of my time. They’re all incapable of logical thought as you have so amply demonstrate

What am to think when this was directly solely to me.

I think Pit Bulls are a constant danger.

It seems some on this thread are dancing on the grave of this poor old woman and that is totally despicable.

Yup.

Border collies, bred to herd, WILL find something/someone to herd.

Labradors, bred to retrieve, WILL find something to retrieve..

Pit bulls, bred to fight and kill, are no different from any random dog.

I confess to referring to you as a pit bull lover if that's what you're referring to. There are those dog lovers who who see no evil.

It seems some on this thread are dancing on the grave of this poor old woman and that is totally despicable.

Hardly. Just breathing a sigh of relief that the owner was the one who suffered the consequences of extremely poor choice of pets rather than some innocent bystander. All too often the owner causes the trouble and someone else is killed or maimed. Truce.

... but I wonder if the pit Bulls she owned were rescue dogs that had been trained to fight?

I am one hundred percent OPPOSED to breed banning. But just as Australian shepherds hardly need to be trained to herd livestock (their training is more to teach them to follow human direction), pit bulls hardly need training to fight. Can you imagine how valuable the dogs we call "pit bulls" (whatever they are, but I know one when I see one -- little eyes, a bit dim looking in the brains department, very short hair and tendency to pinkish skin, huge jaws and neck) when well trained were to families pioneering farms and ranches? Dogs do well when they're used to do the job they were bred to do. Dogs need jobs -- they have dignity. When you take a job bred to do a guardian/protector's job and to fight to the death, and plant him in the role as a "little buddy" to humanity ... it disrespects his dignity, breed, and being.

It's the same thing as getting an Australian shepherd and keeping it as a city dog in a small condo. Without a job and cramped up in small quarters, the dog, highly intelligent and hyper, goes insane. There are better breeds for the pretty serious job of being a human companion and at least barking alarm. If you're going to have a big dog, make sure you walk or run a lot, and give it the jobs it was bred to take care of.

Wow. That’s cold. It’s also right, IMO. Spot on, bottom line.

Yeah, have you ever seen a pug trying to pull a dog sled? It's cute as hell, I'm here to tell you.

Be very afraid....

Seriously, I've heard stories about diabetics waking up to find Fido eating their foot.

Wouldnt own a pit bull myself, I’m more of a retriever guy personally.

I had a pit that retrieved. Had to shame him into the first time, but he loved it after that.

Watch what is going on the next time you see a person with a pit bull on the end of a leash.

Mine stopped to examine and urinate on evertyhing. "Walking" him was an exercise in standing and waiting. Of course, I also allowed him to run with me in the woods. My hyper-active brother...not a dog person...wanted to walk him once. Made him crazy that the dog stopped for 30 seconds every 5 feet.

She didn’t deserve it but it was her choice to have that kind of dog....too bad, but no sorrow from me. It was entirely her own choice. bad choice. Making bad choices causes misery, even in the choice to marry a nitwit. When someone keeps complaining about their spouce, I usually get tired of listening, and tell them “hey you choose him/her.”
