Cat rescuers scramble to save kittens from drain pipe, struggle to find donations and homes

... a group of cat rescuers staked out a Baldwinsville apartment complex, trying to rescue a group of kittens and their mother from a drainage pipe before the snow storm hit.

After two long and stressful days, the rescuers were able to trap four kittens and the mother cat.

But right now is the most stressful time for Daugard and other cat rescue groups in CNY.

"There is no room for more cats," she said. "Everyone is booked to capacity, there is no more room to take in more rescues and there is no more money."

Donations can be made to CNY Veterinary Services with "CNY Cat Rescue" written in the memo line of the check. Checks can be mailed to 5252 State Route 31, Clay, NY 13041.

"I want to help them all, but right now I need help," she said.

Good news, bad news -- there are still too many people who abandon animals.

so... It cost $5 to feed a cat for a week? If this were a TV add, just the cost the production would have fed the cats for the rest of their lives...

But this isn’t a TV ad, they can’t afford to spend money on that.

Animals are the most deserving of help, since while people have choices, animals don’t and whatever happens to them is out of their control.

My daughter and son and I rescued our cat from a storm drain when he was a wee kitten, too young to be away from his mother.

How he got there, we don’t know.

I didn’t think it was news worthy at the time, but in the 5 years since the rescue, I’ve seen a number of news reports on similar rescues that were less interesting and less creative than ours.

He is a great pet, very close to the family.

Glad you were able to rescue and give a happy home to the cat.

While some of the stories make it into the news, I am sure there are many many more that don’t.

Just found another cat rescue story:

Kitten Rescued from 39-Foot Pipe

http://shine.yahoo.com/pets/kitten-rescued-39-foot-pipe-171800893.html

“they used a whole roll of duct tape to connect 12 broomsticks together to try to reach the kitten. Each time the kitty grabbed hold of the device, though, she fell back down the long, narrow pipe.

It was a retired fisherman who lived across the street who ultimately saved the exhausted cat. He modified a fishing net and tied a cable to the broomstick, and after two tries, the 8-week-old kitten was finally pulled to freedom.”

My daughter got a long scarf and dangled it down the storm drain. The little kitten ran to it and grabbed on with his claws and my daughter pulled him out.

He was so young he still had the claw reflex where a kitten holds on tight to things without retracting the claws, or this approach may not have worked.

No way! I dated a guy from Baldwinsville in college. I wonder if the kittens were rescued anywhere near the Traffic Light.

I can’t adopt. Grand Master Fluff is an only cat.

Do human babies in the womb have choices? How have they been making out with them?

I AM kind to animals. What torques me is that most of the bleeding heart animal rescuers would spit in your face if you asked them to support Pro-Life efforts to protect unborn children.

My son and his girlfriend volunteer at a popular local shelter every weekend. They said to donate items instead of giving money. They get handed a lot of money, but there never is enough food and cats go without litter. Something is wrong.

My youngest kitty, Snooki, was part of a litter of orphaned 4 week old kittens discovered in an abandoned home by a real estate agent who took them to a local animal hospital that does rescues. She was sick when I got her and needed about 2 weeks of medications to recover. She has grown up to be a beautiful, intelligent, afectionate and, yes, feisty little girl.

I’ve got 9 cats right now. Most are rescue and many are being turned in due to economy and not being able to care for them.

We have 2 older cats, 1 overweight, one kitten with one eye, and another cat someone left temporary and then moved to Minnesota. She says she’s going to come back and get it. Uh huh.

Obama’s economy is hard on pets as well as humans.

A lot of us can. Many of us can focus on more than one thing.

"My daughter and son and I rescued our cat from a storm drain when he was a wee kitten, too young to be away from his mother. How he got there, we don’t know."

Mom cat was most probably moving her kittens from one location to another. She probably dropped one and couldn't retrieve it.

A feral cat gave birth to two kittens on my property. I noticed that she moved them every week. The last time she moved them it was during a thunderstorm, she lost the grip dropped one because it was squirming. Mom cat panicked and ran off to where she left her first kitten leaving the second kitten behind. Seeing that she was not returning,I grabbed the kitten and brought it to her. She seemed grateful.

I always assumed that the shelters could go buy what they needed for the animals with the monetary donations. Have I been wrong?
