Mom cat was most probably moving her kittens from one location to another. She probably dropped one and couldn't retrieve it.

A feral cat gave birth to two kittens on my property. I noticed that she moved them every week. The last time she moved them it was during a thunderstorm, she lost the grip dropped one because it was squirming. Mom cat panicked and ran off to where she left her first kitten leaving the second kitten behind. Seeing that she was not returning,I grabbed the kitten and brought it to her. She seemed grateful.
