Despite a previous ban, the Norinco T97 is quickly becoming one of the most popular black rifles in Canada.
It is a .223 bullpup with a 19 barrel that uses a short stroke gas piston and a rotating bolt, along with a reciprocating charging handle. At its core, the Type 97 is a civilian version of the Chinese QBZ-95 rifle; standard issue to the Peoples Liberation Army.
This is the latest version, imported by North Sylva as the T97NSR, manufactured by EMI (aka Norinco) in the Peoples Republic of China.
Rather than the proprietary 5.8x42mm cartridge, the Type 97 has been converted to 5.56x45mm for the Canadian market. Along with commonly available ammunition, the T97 also benefits from STANAG magazine compatibility rather than using the curved rock-in magazines specific to the militarys rifles.

When they come in 7.62x39 or 5.45x39, proper commie calibers, Ill be interested.
Sounds like a pain to use. Is it at least cheap?
Given NORINCO’s roots and activities, I won’t support them by buying their products.
Am I the only one who finds it odd that the Canadians can buy guns WE CAN’T BUY IN AMERICA?
This is the case with many imported firearms. If this bullpup was made in the USA, there would be no problems with it (local laws aside).
Just settle for a Tavor instead.
From everything I've read, it's the bullpup to get right now. Yours for a bit over $2K.
Yeah, but the Norinco would be much cheaper. That’s why people would be interested in it in the first place.
I always thought bullpups were ugly.
Well, Norinco did import the model 86S before the import ban...but it goes for $1500 to $2000 used.
Seems to me that all Bullpups would have a rather squishy trigger from the long linkage.
It goes for that because it was banned I assume. What would it sell for if it was consistently imported and sold over the last 20 years? Probably a lot less.
I saw M1As years ago at a dealer. The poor finish got my attention. After seeing NORINCO on the receiver, I knew every thing I needed to know. If it was a Springfield at that price, it would have left with me.
Crap is crap no matter how cheap.
You don’t want to fire one against a wall either.
I always hated the idea of the chamber being beside my head.
Me too. It’s not natural.
Yow!
