I just upgraded my home PC, reluctantly so because my XP worked so well. But as all support for XP will be stopping in 4/2014, I knew I had no choice.
But I have no idea why the people at Microsoft changed the OS from something people got used to over a period of 20 years.
I find myself using the desktop almost exclusively and never using what I consider to be silly apps. Am I seeing this incorrectly and these apps are truly useful? After a day of using this, I think I may never use them.
Would be curious to others thoughts on Windows 8. TIA
I’ve had Windows 8 for about a year and have yet to use the apps. I’m currently downloading 8.1. I don’t know if that will be more useful.
Have it on the laptop. Do not like. Do not use.
A few months ago I picked up a new lap top, my old one had some sticking keys. I found nothing good about the new OS. Most of the apps were for internet surfing and shopping. I preferred a folder for easy access to pictures instead of seeing them randomly floating on my screen. It also had no word processor.
I gave it to my daughter.
I use them frequently on devices with a smaller screen (Surface 2 for example), and rarely on a PC with a large monitor.
I downloaded 8.1 last night and was encouraged because it had the Start button return in it, but it does not act like the original Start button.
I like the Stability of 8, but do not know what the people at Redmond were thinking. In my opinion, you make this tile interface OPTIONAL for those using computers. I understand they want to create a single OS for tablets and computers, but those two devices typically do different things, and should have different interfaces IMO. Redmond needs to start talking to real world users.
What I don’t like about the apps is that I don’t know what I am interfacing with. With a website, you know the source; the apps are a generic thing.
I like the mail app; it is very fast and no ads. Also, the Amazon ap is good...very fast 2 or 3 clicks and your stuff is on the UPS truck.
I also like the new Minesweeper :-)
Before I would use 8.1, I would add classicshell from SourceForge. It is the only thing that makes it work. There may be other issues with 8.1 we do not know about yet.
use 8 with classicshell, then you get your start button back. It is a free download from sourceforge.
I’ve only poked around on a customer’s Windows 8 system. The adjective “intuitive” does not apply.
I recently upgraded my XP desktop to Windows 7. It runs much faster now.
Hopefully Windows 9 will be more like Windows 7.
Thanks for the info.
I’m using 8.1. You can tell Windows to go right to the desk top when booting...in a sense the old way!
Why Win-8? Win-7 Pro 64x is still available as a “downgrade from Win-8” for a $70 credit on most HP machines. I’m buying several high-end PCs to keep as back-ups. Win-8 is a horror show on every machine I’ve tried. I removed Win-8 from my sister’s HP lapper and installed Win-7 Pro 64x, and it’s so much nicer for her. Just wondering... not criticizing.
I will always try to get the latest if possible, and esp if it is stable as Win8 appears to be. I am upgrading from XP because support is stopping 4/14; Win 7 support will stop well before Win 8.
Upgrade to 8.1 and it will be like Vista/Win 7...so I’m told...I’m holding out with Vista now...holding tight...but I’m sure next year I’ll be a Windows 8 customer reluctantly...of course I do have a download of Enlightenment Linux...but my wife won’t learn it and when I buy PC’s and laptops...it’s a group deal...
