Nine Words That Changed the World

Nine Words that Changed the World

There are nine words that irrevocably changed the course of life on planet Earth, the implications on philosophy, theology, and life are that significant. They are three sentences, each containing three words and each illustrating three aspects of a single man that touched the world in a manner so astounding it still echoes to this day:

1.         “Peace, be still.”

Imagine, for a moment, that you are a seaman, that you have experienced the dangers of the winds and the waves and a man says to these literal forces of nature “peace, be still”… and they are!

What sort of man would this be, that even the seas and storms would obey him?

The answer is one to whom all forces, elements, and powers are subject to: one who has very real authority over all created things.

2.         “Lazarus, come out.”

Imagine, if you will, that you’d just spent the afternoon crying and morning the death of a friend at the funeral, surrounded by the deceased’s family and friends and the grief is such that you cannot help but tear up… everybody there is sad. Then someone asks that the casket be opened and tells the deceased to come out… and he does!

What sort of man can raise the dead? Someone given authority over life and death itself, that’s who!

3.         “It is finished.”

Imagine, a man bearing the unbearable. That all the evil of all mankind that ever was or ever will be was packed on to that single soul and that, as he died a horrible physical death –being beaten, whipped, having his limbs impaled and his beard torn out– and the power of those evils dying with him as he uttered his final words before dying: it is finished.

The same man who showed his authority over nature and life itself declared that the power of sin was finished, that the separation of God and Man is at an end.

Of course, it doesn’t just end there, for if it did it wouldn’t be a good ending: it would be utterly unfulfilling to have the Lord of Life subject to Death…and so he came back to life and lives forevermore.

The English “It Is Finished” is from the NT Greek Tetelosthai but in one or three words it is beautiful.

Jesus Got-R-Done.

Yeah... but I only know English, a little Japanese, and some smattering of linguistics factoids.
(Besides, that would ruin the three-sets-of-three pattern.[:(])

Good to be reminded that Jesus is Lord over everything. Sin, death, and the devil DON’T win; Jesus wins. What an honor it is that He has redeemed and made us His own.
