A Canadian cyclist who saw her stolen $1,000 bike being sold on Craigslist took the law into her own hands and stole it right back.
Kayla Smith, from Vancouver, called the seller on Thursday after a pal spotted the ad for what looked like her pinched prized wheels on the classified listings site.
A friend recognized Smiths bike in a Craigslist ad prompting Smith to take matters into her own hands.
They met up in a McDonald's parking lot and, after confirming it was her bike, the 33-year-old asked to take it for a test ride.
Smith says she started riding and thought X this guy and kept riding.
The vendor was reluctant but eventually caved in and said: "Yeah, but don't take off."
Smith noticed the seller had other bikes and cellphones listed and decided to call police. They caution others to let them handle it.
Smith, however, had other ideas ignoring his warning before pedaling as fast as she could into the distance.
"My heart was pounding and I had no idea what to do, so I just got on the bike and was like ' X this guy' and started to ride," she wrote on Reddit.
Smith met up with the Craigslist lister and recognized her $1,000 set of wheels.
Worried the alleged thief was looking for her, the bartender called a friend to meet up.
"We watched the guy start to look for me and he got super freaked out and he suddenly just took off running," she added.
Smith, whose bike was stolen the previous day as she visited the Olympic Village, returned to the website and realized the seller was also offering other bikes and cellphones.
She reported his number to cops, who later cautioned other residents against taking matters into their own hands.
I'm shocked the police didn't arrest her.
At college, someone stole my bike.
I saw it parked at the Library three days later, and stole it back.
What an amazingly poorly written article. Glad she got her bike back.
No arrest, she’s obviously not guilty.
I’m going to say “not guilty”
Her dog wasn’t around... so they let her go.
“She reported his number to cops, who later cautioned other residents against taking matters into their own hands.”
If we don’t, the bad guys get away and we don’t get our stuff back. Good for her.
All I could do was bust out laughing, because WTF!?
She reported his number to cops, who later cautioned other residents against taking matters into their own hands.
The serfs are supposed to remain dependent upon government.
Yeah... no kidding.
By my count she stole her bike back at least four times.
Who wrote this? A 10 year old?...............
If so, the kid needs to be pumped up on Ritalin. He must start typing and then sees a squirrel outside and has to restart the article.
Seems to me, she recovered her property.
They had protective custody of your car. Their insurance will have to pay you. Pretty sure anyhow.
Bummer, though! Tough day. Don’t buy Lotto Tickets.
Someone stole my lawnmower once. The engine was distinctive and I heard it down the street. I confronted the guy who was a “door to door” lawn mower (local bum) and he said that he bought it from two kids. I said, we can always wait for the police so that you can explain how you came into possession of stolen property and he handed it over.
Isn't that a hate crime?
A heartwarming story but it’s too bad the bad thief didn’t get turned into a good thief in the end.
Cops - “Don’t take matters into your own hands”
“Check our bike auctions and buy it back from us in 3 years”
“Cuz we’re sure not going to investigate any petty bike thefts!”
They went down the street and shot a neighbor’s dog. It just isn’t finished until the dog is dead.
