Mexico's Cenapred disaster-management agency provided this photo of an explosion of gas and ash from the Popocatepetl volcano, located about 64 kilometers (40 miles) from Mexico City. EFE/CENAPRED

Popocatepetl, Mexico's second-highest peak, is one of 14 active volcanoes in the Aztec nation. Um...what Aztec nation?

Wow, I climbed the 3 highest Mexican volcanoes, Ixta, Popo and Orizaba in the early 1990’s. Popo has been closed for climbing for much of the time since then. It was spewing steam when I climbed Popo. Like having 1000 matches struck under your nose. Wonder what the EPA thinks about their Diesel and Gasoline sulpher reduction mandates being wiped out by a volcano they cannot regulate or arrest?

Just had two Alaska volcanos lit off in just the last couple of days, Cleveland and Pavlof, they are about 700 miles from me down the Aleutians. They are all including Mexico part of the Ring Of Fire.
Whats next?
I suggest we start observing these events.

and folks wonder where the Aztecs went..

I believe that is the volcano the Spanish explorers climbed and got their first glimpse of that unpronounceable name now known as Mexico City.
Why were the Spanish there? To collect sulfur so they could make gunpowder out of local ingredients.

Sadly, Frederic Church didn't paint Popocatepetl, so Cotopaxi will just have to suffice:
