Wow, I climbed the 3 highest Mexican volcanoes, Ixta, Popo and Orizaba in the early 1990’s. Popo has been closed for climbing for much of the time since then. It was spewing steam when I climbed Popo. Like having 1000 matches struck under your nose. Wonder what the EPA thinks about their Diesel and Gasoline sulpher reduction mandates being wiped out by a volcano they cannot regulate or arrest?

Wonder what the EPA thinks..

Heard one of the EPA fed guys talk earlier this year about all the pollution in Texas. He acknowledged that much of it was coming from Mexico which is why Texas needs to lower their rate to compensate for it. Everyone in the room laughed. You just can’t account for stupid sometimes.

Back in 1970, Mr. Mercat and I camped in the saddle between popo and iota. We were able to see all the ranges in both directions to the Atlantic and to the Pacific. Amazing place.

I climbed to within 400 feet of the top in 1957 or 8. That is about 17,400 feet. Started to feel sick and dizzy and turned around. Still an amazing experience. I don’t believe that Cortez viewed Tenochtitlan from the top of Popo. He or someone else did have people climb to the top to scrape up sulfur for making gun powder. Regarding pollution coming into Texas from Mexico. Is it from those Maquilador (sp?) factories set up in Mexico near the border by our business people and others to take advantage of cheap labor and low pollution emission standards?
