Again, depends on model. R700s are offered in many different configurations with different bedding.
Also, .300 WinMag is a caliber, not a specific firearm. :P And yes, the 700 is offered in that caliber as well.
That’s a bigazz sod poodle.
At home I have a Savage in 22-250; bull barrel, composite stock; scope set to 500yds. Killer.
Nice caliber. I got the .223 so I had a bolt gun that ate the same ammo as my AR.
Personally, I’d go with the Scar 17s heavy. Can’t go wrong with that. It’s the Ferrari of .308s.
You might want to consider an upgrade to a 30/06. It is a bit more versatile that the .308 regarding the number of loads you can buy or work up and packs a little more punch.
Plus the AMMO virtually universal in the US.
I love my Model 70 Winchester 30/06.
Check it out.
It is my opinion that for the money Savage makes the best out of the box bolt guns. I would say that .308 is a little overkill as far as coyotes go. But if you plan on also deer hunting with it is ok.
Most coyote hunters are now using AR-15’s in various calibers because many times you may have the chance to get a double and an AR is the ticket for a fast follow up shot.
My personal coyote gun is an AR-15 chambered in .204 Ruger. I like that caliber because it shoots flat enough that I don’t have to be concerned with hold over untill I am beyond 300 yds.
You should really consider a SAI M1A .308 Winchester! Best shooting gun you will ever own. Good for short range and anything out to 1000 yds! One of the best rifles ever made! One of the best looking rifles too!
The Savage is real neat. I go to eastern WA to shoot prairie dogs - nasty critters. I can sit off 5 to 6ooyds using a bench rest.
For your expected type of shooting, I think a model 700 in .260 Remington would be ideal.
The .308 is a good all around rifle but the .260 is an excellent long range or predator caliber and kicks less.
Of course .308 ammo is a lot more popular.
I have a 700. The action is loose and damn thing hurts my shoulder.
Accurate as hell, hurts after 25 rounds, action pisses me off.
Still, I can make about 25 rounds group under 1” using a Leupold MK IV.
I am getting the new 783 and I’ll switch the Luepold over to that and then send the 700 out for a new bolt that is way smoother.
The 783 has a dampening system that will help with my anticipation and flinching from the pain. It has a better Bolt that glides instead of stuttering as the 770 does.
When I get the 770 fixed I’ll put the Luepold back on it and fit the 783 with a Brown and Schmidt.
I know about P Dogs being from New Mexico and all.
The last one I dispatched (on my property) did a favor to their gene pool. It emerged from it’s burrow for some mini carrots and I got it with a .22 smoothbore from about 15 feet.
The Savage bolt action is a great gun and the 308 Win cartridge is good out to about 800 yards. I have heard that the 260 Rem (also based on the 308 casing) is the hot cartridge for the 1000 yard shooters.
The 770 is the gimped economy take on the 700. It’s not well finished and it is basically terrible to work the action on.
But it’s not a real 700.
I’ve also never heard of a 700’s bolt stuttering. My 700VTR doesn’t stutter, chatter or do anything like that. The bolt moves smoothly on it. Not quite like oil on glass, but not like dragging a stick through sand either.
The 24” varmint barreled Savage with Accu trigger and Accu stock. With an old Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x44 I can just about choose which eye I want to shoot out of a coyote. I get 3025 fps with 46gr of Varget under a 155gr Nosler Accubond bullet in the RP brass I don’t particularly like. Now if only them coyotes would stand still long enough for me to get my act together...I actually use the same rifle in .223 REM for coyotes and prairie daugs. So far just paper with the .308.
Get a bi pod you can shoot with in the sitting position.
And don’t just duplicate that load, work up your own. (Your mileage may vary)
That’s the next economy version of the 700. Better than the 770 by all reports but still gimped a bit. The bolt handle is plastic, for example.

A rifle well ahead of its time. I had one in .284 that I would dearly love back.
