In the Absence of Guns
The American Spectator ^ | June 2000 | Mark Steyn

In Britain, defending your property can get you life.

Celebrity news from the United Kingdom: In April, Germaine Greer, the Australian feminist and author of The Female Eunuch, was leaving her house in East Anglia, when a young woman accosted her, forced her back inside, tied her up, smashed her glasses, and then set about demolishing her ornaments with a poker.

A couple of weeks before that, the 85-year-old mother of Phil Collins, the well-known rock star, was punched in the ribs, the back, and the head on a West London street, before her companion was robbed. “That’s what you have to expect these days,” she said, philosophically.

Anthea Turner, the host of Britain’s top-rated National Lottery TV show, went to see the West End revival of Grease with a friend. They were spotted at the theatre by a young man who followed them out and, while their car was stuck in traffic, forced his way in and wrenched a diamond-encrusted Rolex off the friend’s wrist.

A week before that, the 94-year-old mother of Ridley Scott, the director of Alien and other Hollywood hits, was beaten and robbed by two men who broke into her home and threatened to kill her.

Former Bond girl Britt Ekland had her jewelry torn from her arms outside a shop in Chelsea; Formula One Grand Prix racing tycoon and Tony Blair confidante Bernie Ecclestone was punched and kicked by his assailants as they stole his wife’s ring; network TV chief Michael Green was slashed in the face by thugs outside his Mayfair home; gourmet chef to the stars Anton Mosimann was punched in the head outside his house in Kensington…

This is what the Statists lust after. An unarmed demoralized America. At the mercy of the criminal. I realize this is an oldie but it's darn sure a goodie. I didn't like Steyn's treatment of Newt but when you're right you're right and he nails this one.

Just wait when the US celebrities get their taste of own medicine. Now it may not be them directly but could be a family member who is not covered and protected by their kin’s money.

They would still be idiotic enough to find a way to blame it on law-abiding gun owners and push even more to take our guns away.

I dare say they won’t like that. But they’ll have had a major part in making that criminal activity possible.

I don’t care for Tom Cruise but I must admit it was brave of him to react the way he did. Being an action actor I’m sure he has been schooled in the martial arts.

There are liberals who actually believe that the more muggings there are, that more of the muggees will be persuaded to address the “root causes of crime” by embracing liberalism.

Plus the muggers are simply speeding up the redistribution process.

If the leaders of the British government were smart, they would send to Austin for a copy of the Texas penal code and adopt its provisions concerning firearms, the death penalty, etc.

I saw this today on You Tube. If it’s genuine, there’s hope for the young-uns after all. Some of them get what the disarming of the populace really leads to.

The next time someone asks why you “need” a so-called assault weapon ask them why Rosa Parks needed to sit and not stand on the bus. The answer is simple, there is no requirement to show need in order to exercise your rights.

I guess Tom’s got some cojones after all. It takes pretty big ones to chase “a gang” unarmed, size of gang not specified.

Because the police cannot guarantee safety from mob violence during a period of the loss of law and order.

Because nobody can guarantee me that our govt won’t turn tyrannical at some point in the future.

All the reason I need.

Yes, he could have just picked up the phone and called the police while watching the action. Instead he reacted correctly. I guess I have more respect for him than I used to.

Somehow their “root causes of crime” always omit personal responsibility and life choices.

The Mounties are Canadian, not British. Its a very broad stretch to equate the motto “the mounties always get their man” to “leave it to us” and in any case, that is not their motto.
