“My mom grew up where her grandfather had homesteaded in 1879- north central Nebraska. They had no plants to buy but they always had a large garden. I remember many years later (now we are talking south central Nebraska) when she planted tomato seed straight into the garden- She had ripe tomatoes ONE week later than from transplanted tomatoes. Only one week. I am going to do that this year. They certainly come up volunteer. I get as many tomatoes that way as I do from the plants I set out. they are not hybrid — I prefer heirloom most anything—”
I love heirlooms too ... mostly because I can save the seeds. I like the idea of not having to be dependent on seed companies each year. I still buy seeds to try new and different things, but I have more than enough to plant and save if I was unable to purchase new ones.
I’ve had tomato volunteers in the past as well. That might be a interesting experiment to try this year ... sowing some inside under lights and direct sowing others and recording date of first tomato for each. It would be interesting to see if the extra effort is really worth it. I think it is worth it for peppers. I have direct seeded peppers before and had very few by the end of season, but had a big crop from the ones I started inside last year. Of course, the pepper variety might have a lot to do with it as well.
One of the fun things about gardening- there are so many things a person can do- try this or that, experiment, learning as we go.

I will remember her and her brother the rest of my life. Both were wonderful lovable companions for 11 and 12 years.
Alice, I did not see your request until after I posted the ping to this weeks thread. You may want to repost these pictures so that more people see them on this weeks thread. The big mounds look a little like boxwood.

My wife and I have had to do that with a couple of our Siamese boys after 15-20 years...hate it. Hate it more than anything...sorry that they are both gone now, Red. (Missed seeing this post last week...busy starting seeds.)
My condolences RD. We had to make the same choice for Dolly back in October for the very same symptoms. The vet who came to the house had a little prayer with her and we said ours and Dolly was gone... but her spirt lives on.
Thanks both of you for your kind thoughts. It is sad that these wonderful family members don’t live longer lives.

Not cutting down the asparagus til spring——
I wonder if it would apply more to areas that do not get down to the bone breaking cold like we do here. Perhaps nourishing the roots longer. I can do some looking and might find an answer, It is just a point of curiosity.

How your relic is one of these. If it works, it still has value to a user. Don’t know a lot about values, but I’d say anything between $100 - 400 depending on the make, condition and number of screens. A mint Clipper mill with a half dozen screens would be worth at least $300 to me.
Well now, you have triggered my curiosity. I looked at the pictures and a couple look like a possible match. I have to go take a closer look rather than going by memory. Selling it would be good, but my bigger concern would be finding someone that would use it. Certainly I do not want it going to the trash if I curl up my toes before I do something with it. At least outwardly it looks to be in good shape.
I will try in the near future to get a picture of it.
