WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD VOLUME 49 DECEMBER 7, 2012
Free Republic | 12/07/2012 | greeneyes

Posted on 12/07/2012 11:18:15 AM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Today is the anniversary of the day that will live in enfamy. I want to take the time to thank all Freepers who are vetrans or on active duty. A special prayer for all of you and your families. Best wishes to all.

It's a cloudy day here in Missouri, but the weather is mild going to a high of 58 and low of 48 tonight. We have had sunshine and balmy days for most of the week, and I took the row covers off to let the plants breath a little more, but also to harveset the bounty.

A little lettuce and lots of Rosemary, Stevia, Lavendar, Parsley, Carrots, and a snip of tarragon. Still eating on falls tomato pickings-all are various shades of red-no green ones left.

The green bells are blooming like crazy, and already have 9 peppers of various sizes developing. My lemon tree has almost 20 little pea sized buds, but I may pinch back some of those.

I planted some more spinach and lettuce this week, but it hasn't sprouted yet. Hope the weather in your location is great and you are enjoying your gardening activities. Best Wishes, and God Bless.

We still have lettuce, turnips and turnip greens in the garden; some spinach in the gutter garden on the side of the garage. (So far, I’m not excited about the gutter garden; it’s messy, soil is of necessity shallow and production is low. It’s husband’s project, so I don’t want to hurt his feelings.) - If a person can just raise a little lettuce and a few tomatoes, they’re ahead of the game; tomato growing season has been over for us for a while.

I am awful. I snort disparagingly everytime I see this ridiculous post/thread.

How exactly, what should maybe be a letter to the grandchildren (under nine years old) becomes a regular post on FR, eating up band width, I’m so sure I don’t know.

I recommend posting in Junior Scholastic.

Sorry. I now feel better for getting this off my chest.

And yet you click on it each and every time?

Good for you. I wish we were so fortunate! Everything here is dead except the parsley and sage in the flower boxes, and a lovely little thyme plant that is sitting on the kitchen table. Even the basil plant I brought in died, but I never have any luck with trying to overwinter basil.

The bamboo we planted along the driveway a few years ago is doing very well.

Isn’t stevia the plant that can be used as a sugar substitute? If so, do you dry it and grind it up or simply add as a green?

I agree with your first sentence, you are awful, but there are around 500 Freepers on the Garden Ping List, and I just recently took over posting the thread from Red Devil, so I can't really tell you how it all started.

Frankly, I recommend that you just ignore the thread, it must have been awful holding back all these years, but I am glad you feel better.

It appears that your response to stress is to spread it around and denigrate others who are enjoying a little discussion about growing their own food.

I prefer to spread a little cheer, so you have a great day and God Bless you and your family. May the Lord grant you tolerance to forbear all the many trials and tribulations that obviously come your way frequently.

To: Twinkie; All

Sorry for the triple ping-I only hit the button once I swear. I also missed some typos before posting-distracted by a sick grand daughter. LOL.

Enjoy the lettuce and turnips.

What is a “gutter garden”?

Ridiculous? Really? Then why open this thread? There are many of us that enjoy gardening, and enjoy this thread- if you don’t then BYE

Self-sufficiency/independence is one of the lynchpins of conservative ideology...being able to provide for your family has its roots in Scripture. People who are unable to grow their own food may find themselves in a very tight spot in the coming years...

Carry on.

The Garden thread predates your date of joining and claims many regular participants. Have you ever heard of “When in Rome...?” At least tolerate those who do.

Decent weather, all considered.

14 of my 18 germinated apricot seeds have pushed through the surface, and are putting out their first leaves.

Here it is...

"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." 1 Timothy 5:8

G-d has provided us with seed...get those orders in. :-)

I have heard that bamboo is vigorous. I planted some basil seed in a little 5 inch pot in January of 2010. Set it outside during the growing season.

I harvested leaves all summer, brought it in and it has grown like gangbusters in and outdoors ever since. It has even been knocked off ledges and put back in the pot. It still survives.

Just harvested a bunch for #1 daughter when she was here cooking tomato sauce for lasagna. It is the geneovese(?spelling?) variety. I potted it in Mels mix and give it a dose of dynagrow once in a while, and have to give it just a little water daily cause it is so big and the pot is so small.
