This haunting collection of images shows what it would look like if the ghosts of World War II returned to our streets.
The remarkable pictures overlay modern scenes from France with atmospheric photographs taken in the same place during the war.
Historical expert Jo Teeuwisse, from Amsterdam, began the project after finding 300 old negatives at a flea market in her home city depicting familiar places in a very different context.

Weird... the soldier standing at a stop sign that won’t be there for years.

Fantastic.
The unfortunate reality is that most 0bama supporters look at our troops who liberated Europe as evil.

And those guys could have ordered anything, asked for ketchup, and nobody would have said boo to them.

What unit are the US soldiers from that are wearing camouflage fatigues? Rangers? I was not aware camouflage fatigues were used in the ETO.

That would've been the second picture the FReeper posted and third on the DailyMail.
Geeze......one pulled post can really mess up some sarcasm.

The thing that strikes me is the row of newly planted trees along the street. Who plants trees in the middle of a war?

They could have been planted weeks or months earlier, before the invasion.
Life went on, even in occupied France.

I recall reading years ago that they were issued briefly in the ETO and then withdrawn due to friendly fire issues. Not sure if the issue was confined to specific units.

I have planted trees at our first home during late fall...Was told and it was true, once the sap stops running you can even yak a tree out with a wench or car...My uncle gave us 3 fruit trees he wanted to get rid of, just be careful not to strip the bark completly by tying where the chain will go a blanket...It was a pear, italian plum and due to the fact that it was over 1/2 century ago, don't remember the third...
ps the ground was frozen but not into a deep freeze yet which can come any time in Michigan...the tree's all lived, hubby had already dug the hole before the freeze...If the tree has no more leaves on it, the sap isn't running...
I just made a booboo. I reread and though you said winter and not war.....duh..
