What I don't get about those who proclaim the desirability of such methods is why Americans would want to become Romans or Mongols. I'd rather be an American. -- the reason is that being an American means being nice and tolerant and that is like being a civilized Irani in Samarkhand in the wake of the Mongols

The English did manage to suppress the Great Mutiny of 1857, albeit with a great deal of difficulty.
There was a rumor going around that either beef fat or pork fat was being used to seal the paper cartridges that the soldiers had to bite off to get to the gunpowder. The British immediately denied this but formed a commission to investigate. PC virtue signalling was alive and well even back then. Unfortunately the commission reported that the cartridges were being sealed with both beef and pork fat, and that was what set off the Sepoy Rebellion.
Tensions were already high due to a new strain of British missionary that was putting pressure on the Hindus especially, banning sati (burning of widows) and other superstitious and repugnant practices.
