Battleship Earth: Does the Pentagon have the right weapons to fight off an alien invasion?
Foreign Policy ^ | May 30, 2012 | Cara Parks and Joshua E. Keating

As summer blockbuster season kicks into high gear, big-budget action movies like The Avengers, Battleship, and Prometheus remind us that there's one thing that unites Americans: Our shared fear of an alien attack. They also remind us that when the invading space fleet arrives, humanity is not going to surrender without a fight to our intergalactic invaders. Instead, we will band together to fight off their incredibly advanced weaponry with our ... well, with what, exactly? Are we really ready to battle our would-be alien overlords?

Luckily, the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, better known as DARPA, as well as some of the world's largest weapons manufacturers, are dreaming up the weapons of the future today. With the help of everything from lasers on jets to hypersonic planes to invisibility cloaks, we just might be able to make the battle for Earth a fair fight. You may think we're joking, but why else would NASA be uploading The Avengers to the International Space Station if not as a training manual? Here's a look at some of the most space-worthy inventions being cooked up now.

No, God is God. Bad enough that this thread and what it links to uses an L. Ron Hubbard book title. Should we believe in Xenu and “space planes” too?

WHY ever bother?

Have Obama do a meet and greet or better yet, a beer summit.

He already knows if that is going to happen or not, doesn’t He...and the outcome?

There is greater chance that God is an alien(s) who developed earth as an experiment than a God invented by men on Earth, to control other people, who no one has ever seen other than some writings..by men..

If they exist, and if they come, and if they actually choose to reveal themselves... you’re right.

They will lie to us.

Yes, basically anti-alien suicide vests, very good!

In the program, the aliens had already eliminated our air assets and they didn’t fear any kind of air attack by us.

Their ships were huge and were parked, hovering, about a mile off the ground over these various strategic locations. They had enormous cargo bay doors that were always open and through which their forces (everything was robotic) would ascend and descend to attack us.

So a couple of dozen men, suicide bombers, assembled beneath one of these ships, deployed their little backpack balloons, and floated up into the open cargo bay, then spread out looking for the most vulnerable things they could find inside the alien ship. Then they would blow those vulnerable looking things up in the hopes they could bring the ship down. Everyone knew it was a suicide mission.

Kind of silly, I know. But the Science Channel got the idea across. You have hundreds, worldwide perhaps thousands, of the best military minds in the world, squirreled away in underground bunkers, mountain retreats, etc., waging a relentless guerrilla campaign against enemy invaders. And you hope you can maintain it for years and convince the aliens that the Earth, and whatever they might be after here (in the show, it was amino acids), wasn’t worth it. Because we’d have no other choice.

LOL, best response.

I find it fascinating, though, that this is a full article in Foreign Policy magazine.

As I mentioned in another post why would the aliens want to fight us? Would it not just be easier for them to spray a chemical in the atmosphere that kills humans? We currently have that technology and I'm sure the aliens would also.

No, it's a good point. I agree with you 100%. Personally, I think if they come and decide they want something here, what would follow wouldn't even qualify as a fight, even if we threw our most advanced weapons at them.

They'll be so advanced, it'll be like one of us coming across a can of earthworms and deciding we wanted something the earthworms had. Don't ask me what a can of earthworms could possibly have that we would want, or what we would have that super advanced aliens would want. IF we wanted it, we'd just dump the can out and take it, all their squirming around notwithstanding. Oh, the worms might describe it as fighting, but to us it'd just look like a bunch of futile squirming around. It would be so ineffective, we wouldn't even recognize it as fighting.

I suspect that is where we would be vis-a-vis any aliens who came to Earth.

Incidentally, did you know that the average star out there is one to two billion years older than our Sun? We can expect that any advanced civilization we encounter will be, on average, roughly, one to two billion years more advanced than us, all other things being equal.

No, boys and girls, it IS NOT a Star Trek universe out there. We WILL NOT be boldly going where no man has gone before, looking for new life forms to make friends with. Instead, if we know what's good for us, we will be creeping around in the shadows, hoping not to be noticed, like tiny little rodents scurrying around at the feet of enormous herds of Tyrannosaurus Rex.

H.G. Wells could be right - bacteria might attack alien flesh like overripe fruit. On the other hand, the aliens could be bringing along some nasty bugs of their own.
