UNITED KINGDOM:

Minelayer HMS Ariadne laid down.

Aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable commissioned. (Dave Shirlaw)

GERMANY: U-199 laid down. (Dave Shirlaw)

U.S.S.R.: Soviet General Zhukov arrives in Moscow from Leningrad. He will assume command of the defence of Moscow.

Field Marshal Walther von Reichenau, the C-in-C of the German Sixth Army today told his men:

“In the east, the soldier is not merely a fighter according to the rules of war, but also the bearer of an inexorable national idea and the Avenger of all bestialities inflicted upon the German people and its racial kin. Therefore the soldier must always have a full understanding for the necessity of a severe but just atonement on Jewish subhumanity.”

Hitler likes the wording so much that he is going to have it issued as a model for other generals on the eastern front.

German Heeresgruppe Süd (GFM Gerd von Rundstedt) ends the battle of encirclement along the Sea of Azov and takes 100,000 prisoners. (Jack McKillop, Russ Folsom and Michael F. Yaklich)

CANADA:

Trawler HMS Magdalen laid down Midland, Ontario.

U.S.A.: The motion picture “Never Give a Sucker an Even Break” is released today. Directed by Edward Cline, this comedy stars W.C. Fields (in his last starring film) and Franklin Pangborn. The plot has Fields attempting to sell his life story to Hollywood and on his way there, he runs into numerous crazy situations that are hilarious.

Tank production in Detroit, Michigan, is hampered by an inter-union struggle as CIO members refuse to handle parts made by AFL workers. (Jack McKillop)

• "Thousands of Slovak Jews are sent to labor camps at Sered, Vyhne, and Nováky.
• "Slovak, Bohemian, and Moravian Jews are forced from their homes and into ghettos."

"The Germans established the Lódz (Poland) Ghetto in early 1940, entrapping 150,000 Jews.
In 1941 and '42, nearly 40,000 more Jews were deported to Lódz from Berlin, Vienna, Prague, and other areas."

I'd say that was a wise decision.

Headline: "Hitler’s Secret Order to His Troops – 6"

If you ever wondered what Nazi propaganda in its purest form looked like, well, here it is:

"...God's mercy on our people and the entire European world if this barbaric enemy had been able to move his tens of thousands of tanks before we moved ours!...

"This is a result of nearly a twenty-five-year-long Jewish rule that, as bolshevism, is basically similar to the general form of capitalism.
The bearers of this system in both cases are the same: Jews and only Jews."

In fact, Stalin's plans -- like those of so many others in 1940 -- were to repeat the First World War, only this time Russia would wait patiently until after Germany and France had destroyed each other, then move to take over Europe.
After France collapsed so quickly, Stalin had no plans except to defend the Soviet Union against a possible German attack, in 1942.

As for the "similarity" alleged by Hitler, between Bolshevism and capitalism, that is the Big Lie which even today Liberals, Progressives and such want us to believe: oh, they're all the same, those communists and capitalists.
Hitler called it "the general form of capitalism."
In other words: as generally understood in socialist countries like Nazi Germany -- a form which was not capitalism at all, but rather Fascism, and yes, indistinguishable in practical terms from Bolshevism...

Finally, Hitler himself must have known the ultimate irony to his words, since his former boss and ally, German General Eric Ludendorf was responsible for putting Vladimir Lenin on that sealed train in order to foment the Revolution which would take Russia out of the First World War.

The Soviet Union in 1941 was "Bolshevik" because Germany had made it Bolshevik in 1917 as an act of war against Russia.
