Sumner Welles appears on the cover of Time today, August 11, 1941. He was close to both FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt and probably would have replaced Hull as SoS if not for his homosexual activity.

August 11

"At the beginning of the war, the Jews of Lvov numbered 110,000--the third largest Jewish community in Poland.
A flood of refugees brought an additional 100,000.
The SS and their Ukrainian helpers murdered all but a few thousand.

"The killing began in June 1941.
Encouraged by Einsatzgruppe C, Ukrainian nationalists unleashed hellish pogroms that over the next two months claimed 6000 Jewish lives.
That fall the Nazis forced Jews to move into a section of the city that was sealed with barbed wire.
While moving into this ghetto, 5000 elderly and disabled people were murdered; the women were bludgeoned, the men lined against a wall and shot.

"In 1941 the SS set up a camp and forced Lvov's Jews to perform slave labor.
Sadistic camp commanders used Jews for target practice, aiming at noses or fingers.
The injured were finished off with a shot.
Those judged unfit for work were marched to a sandy area away from camp, where they were murdered.
As many as 200,000 were executed in this "Valley of Death."
Tens of thousands were shipped to the Belzec, Poland, death camp.

"While liquidating the Lvov Ghetto in 1943, SS members hunted down and killed every Jew they could find.
Some fled to nearby forests.
A handful survived by hiding in sewers."

21,000 lbs is pretty heavy for a fighter if you ask me. What is that, 4 times heavier than a P-40? Heck, I think this plane is heavier than a B-17.

How does 330 MPH compare with other fighters out there?

According to my book on U.S. planes, the P-38, which is also a two engined design had a top speed of 420 mph, so significantly faster. The P-39 maxed out at 400 mph, and the P-40 could go 375 mph.

Looks like even the Spitfire MK-V is faster at 370 mph.

There is also the XP-47J which flew at 504 mph, fastest sustained level flight speed obtained by a piston engine, but I don’t think this plane is flying yet. the XP-47B only made its first flight back in May.

So it’s slower and less maneuverable than the likely opposition, but better armed. Maybe they could put treads on it and use it on the ground.

That or they can put an AVS Mark II radar in it and make it a submarine hunter. Assuming of course that it has decent range.

They were probably ‘checked’ into all the local hotels.

Tight bodice alert - Pg 33.

They finally ran illustrations of the Bismarck affair. I don't see the picture someone posted back in May from a Time/Life archive. Maybe Time magazine did their own feature.

You're parsing their report. You should have more trust in our Soviet ally. I mean our future ally. I mean our potential ally if some unforeseeable event should force us to enter the war.
