Help Sought To ‘Catch the Kid’ (NM-after Billy the Kid again)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | July 15, 2011 | Sean Olson

Former Gov. Bill Richardson thought about pardoning the infamous New Mexico bandit Billy the Kid.

Gov. Susana Martinez is deputizing the whole world to catch him all over again.

Martinez rolled out the state’s newest Tourism Department program, dubbed “Catch the Kid,” on Thursday to draw travelers to New Mexico, promising $10,000 to whoever follows the clues to track down Billy the Kid and bring him to justice.

“Some people have considered pardoning Billy the Kid, but as the governor and a … career prosecutor for 25 years, I’m here to say that we are not letting him off the hook,” Martinez told a news conference in Albuquerque’s Old Town.

Tourism Department officials have left clues in 10 cities across the state and will be giving away weekly prizes for participants to win travel packages, food and other travel-related gifts, said Monique Jacobson, Tourism Department secretary.

Forgot to mention that the Tourism Department is spending $630,000 of taxpayer money on this promotion.

He's hiding out on Bill Richardson's Rail Runner. Almost no one is on it to catch him.

I cut ‘em some slack for that. With the fire publicity, tourism is prolly down. Hope the expenditure pays off for you New Mexicans.

Actually, the article did mention that positive advertising to offset the fire stories was part of the reason for the promotion. I drove to Colorado over the Fourth and up I-25 to the west and to the east smoke from the Los Conchos and Pacheco fires obscured the horizon. It was especially bad in the Espanola area with the sky orange brown and visibility poor.

Used to live there, got family there, been down the canyon. Any definitive ruling on the cause and origin of the fire?

Heard this on the news last night. Personally, I think it's a great and very creative idea which might actually make lemonade from lemons.

I continue to be very impressed with our "Mama Grizzly-cub" governor!
